Draft Review - in SuperCoach terms

Here is an article I wrote (done half) for SuperCoach HQ. I done all the odd numbers

#1 - GWS - Lachie Whitfield
Who is he?
Athletic, consistent midfielder with good endurance who has been touted as the number one since the beginning of the year. 
SuperCoach 2013? 
Easy to see him playing regularly in the young Giants' outfit next year, because he has plenty of class and talent. But beware, he'll be very pricey, so expect to fork out about $200,000 to have him in your side.

#2 - GWS - Jonathan O'Rourke
Who is he?
Known by scouts for oozing class. O'Rourke will fit right into the Giants' side, not just because they are all inexperienced, but because he is very versatile with his play and ability.
SuperCoach 2013?
At this stage, many sides should sport at least one of Whitfield or O'Rourke. But there won't be room for both, due to the increased value that comes with being a high draftee.

Lachie Plowman
#3 - GWS - Lachie Plowman
Who is he? 
The top key defender in the draft. He is a attacking defender who provides plenty of rebound out of defence.
SuperCoach 2013?
Plowman won't be the highest scorer, but should be given plenty of opportunity at the Giants next year and he should be a solid cash cow.

#4 - Melbourne - Jimmy Toumpas
Who is he?
A super player with skill, speed and the ability to be equally good on both sides of his body. Melbourne is a rebuilding
team so expect the South Australian captain Toumpas to be thrown straight into the deep end. And then expect him to swim.
SuperCoach 2013?
I like Toumpas as a SuperCoach option because he'll be marginally cheaper than Whitfield and O'Rourke but probably just as likely to play and score highly.

#5 - Western Bulldogs - Jake Stringer
Who is he?
A very talented young player, Stringer can play up forward and kick goals or in the midfield and rack up possessions. 
SuperCoach 2013?
The Bulldogs are in rebuilding phase, so expect to see Stringer this year. If he is getting games early, then I would consider as he has potential to be a high scorer. 

#6 - Western Bulldogs - Jackson Macrae
Who is he?
Macrae is an aptly skilled footballer who is an elite athlete, and works very effectively through the middle of the ground. However, he played briefly in stints during 2012 as a key forward, despite standing at only 188cms.
SuperCoach 2013?
Macrae was prolific in the TAC Cup GF this year, with 28 handballs, a goal and the winning golden point. Any youngster coming into 'The Kennel' will be given opportunities, and Macrae is no exception. Will be a unique pick.

#7 - Port Adelaide - Ollie Wines
Who is he?
A tough explosive inside midfielder who wins his own ball. He is a strong tackler and can drift forward and cause damage up there as well.
SuperCoach 2013?
Lock him in. Wines is the future for Port Adelaide and they will play him straight away. He will be a high scorer because he racks up possessions and kicks goals.

#8 - Brisbane - Sam Mayes
Who is he?
He's a quick-off-the-mark lead up forward who also impressed in the midfield throughout 2012. He was almost rated as one of the best kicks in the draft.
SuperCoach 2013?
Mayes is most likely to start his career as a deep-ish forward, so that will impact his scoring ability. He isn't one to waste the ball though, and if he's able to be selected as a forward, then you can't cross him off your list just yet.

#9 - Richmond - Nick Vlastuin
Who is he?
Vlastuin attacks the ball as hard as anyone and thrives on winning the contested ball. He can play in the midfield or down back.
SuperCoach 2013?
Vlastuin looks like one of the best rookie defenders SuperCoach wise at this stage and if he is named in round one I would lock him in.

#10 - Essendon - Joe Daniher (F/S)
Who is he?
An easy choice for the Bombers through the father-son rule, as he could have gone a lot higher. Can play as a ruckman or key forward as he stands at 201cms and could keep growing.
SuperCoach 2013?
James Hird has said he expects Daniher to play 10-15 senior games next year, so that's promising. He'll be around the $130,000 price mark, so certainly worth the price.

#11 - Carlton - Troy Menzel
Who is he?
Very skilful midfielder who can run all day. He can also play up forward and boot bags of goals.
SuperCoach 2013?
Will be hard for Menzel to break into the Blues midfield next year and I would expect him to be the sub on a few occasions. There are probably better options.

#12 - GWS - Kristian Jaksch
Who is he?
Key defender. One of the highest rated in the draft and has been praised for his athleticism and disposal efficiency. Giants will play him, no doubt.
SuperCoach 2013?
Read the first two words of the above paragraph. 'Key defender'. Sorry Kristian, probably not this year.

#13 - Gold Coast - Jesse Lonergan 
Who is he?
Tough inside midfielder and a strong tackler. He is a fierce competitor and never stops trying for his team.
SuperCoach 2013?
Will be given game time in a young Suns midfield and will suit the SuperCoach scoring system as he wins a lot of contested ball.

#14 - GWS - Aidan Corr
Who is he?
Corr was GWS' third key defender selection in the 2012 draft, but possesses no less potential.
SuperCoach 2013?
He's shown he's capable of 'swingman' status, playing a little bit up forward as well as a key defensive post, but it's hard to see him playing a majority of games and so it's a no from me.

#15 - North Melbourne - Taylor Garner
Who is he? 
Garner can play up forward or in the midfield. He is a great mark and is very mobile and plays like Nat Fyfe. 
SuperCoach 2013?
Could get games up forward for North with a few departures over the off season. Can kick a goal so should return you some solid SuperCoach scores.

#16 - Geelong - Jackson Thurlow
Who is he?
The mid to tall defender (191cms) was almost a surprise choice for the Cats, but due to a lack of young defenders, it seems a logical choice. He was All-Australian at the National Titles after averaging an impressive 25 disposals!
SuperCoach 2013?
Buckets of potential, but ultimately it's always hard for youngsters to secure a spot in the Geelong side. A key injury to the back half could open it right up for him, and his SuperCoach aspirations. 

#17 - Fremantle - Josh Simpson 
Who is he?
A very quick and exciting midfielder with plenty of x-factor about him. He uses the ball well and can push forward and kick a goal.
SuperCoach 2013?
Ross Lyon hasn't been know for playing the youngsters straight away and is the perfect sub player, which may result in some low scores.

#18 - Collingwood - Brodie Grundy
Who is he?
The Sturt ruckman was initially tipped to go in the top five only a month ago, but slid into the welcoming hands of the Magpies. Can play forward capably because he has an awesome set of hands.
SuperCoach 2013?
While he's certainly ready to play from round one (he's 202cms and 100kgs), whether or not there's room in the Collingwood side is debatable. If he's selected I've no doubt he could score prolifically. 


Ben Kennedy
#19 - Collingwood - Ben Kennedy
Who is he?
A under sized midfielder and a prolific ball winner. He is pretty quick and plays very similar to Brent Harvey.
SuperCoach 2013?
Is a ball magnet, but will he get game time at the Magpies? Only time will tell, but if he is named round one, I would pick him.

#20 - Collingwood - Tim Broomhead
Who is he?
The latest addition to the Collingwood on-ball-brigade. With great endurance and ability, Broomhead can play in most positions. And we know that Jock Reynolds has already 'cleaned up' with the puns on his name.
SuperCoach 2013?
There's a perception that the quick Broomhead is a mostly outside player, but he can win the contested ball, which is great for SuperCoach. But getting a game at the Pies will be his biggest challenge, and a prime sub candidate.

#21 - Western Bulldogs - Nathan Hrovat
Who is he?
Just like Kennedy, Hrovat is a little under sized and is a ball magnet. He attacks the ball with no fear and is very composed under pressure.
SuperCoach 2013?
Defiantly consider him. Is a ball magnet and will play plenty of games at the Bulldogs.

#22 - Sydney - Dean Towers
Who is he?
A mature aged selection for the Swans was a little unexpected, but the 22 year-old is a tough midfielder who is tall and has electric pace.
SuperCoach 2013?
Hard to tell this early, especially because Sydney's midfield has plenty of depth and was very settled last season. Have to say no at this point in time. 

#23 - Marco Paparone 
Who is he?
Paparone can play as a key forward or as a midfielder. He has elite endurance and a lot of agility. 
SuperCoach 2013?
May struggle for game time and won't be a huge scorer anyway. There are better options elsewhere.

#26 - Melbourne - Jack Viney (F/S)
Who is he?
Hard nut midfielder who played VFL last year and was in the news plenty for being the son of Todd Viney.
SuperCoach 2013?
He's a certainty for me, as the Demons would have to be eager to play the young lad. He's ready for AFL physically at least, and will be a solid cash cow to patrol your SC bench.

Thanks for your opinion JROO8, with so many possible midfield cash cows for next season geez it is going to be a head ache working out what strategy will need to be implemented. With players like Luke Mitchell, Alex Woodward who will most likely get game time, where can you fit all these guys in as well as your guns. Maybe the 1 gun and 7 rookie strategy might have to be the go. So many options.

nice write up m8 as always my current rookie mids are Wines, Viney, O'Meara and Jesse Lonergan

starting with 4/8 mid rookies is the right move i think and as you know just have to see who gets named round 1 some people like to keep players if not named over others who are don't think it's a good strategy

Great stuff, JROO! Solid write-up. I agree with kilbluff in saying 4/8 mid rookies. But then I'll probably start someone like Ball for example given his price. I'll be looking at O'Meara, Viney, Wines and maybe Crouch in the mids, but like someone else said, there are several options.

#1 - GWS - Lachie Whitfield
is a gun but will be too pricey for me


#2 - GWS - Jonathan O'Rourke
if i go with a pricey rookie, it will be whitfield

#3 - GWS - Lachie Plowman
could be a decent defence rookie, but is a tall so will prob take time to develop

#4 - Melbourne - Jimmy Toumpas
same as o'rouke

#5 - Western Bulldogs - Jake Stringer
another tall, will take time, plus injuries

#6 - Western Bulldogs - Jackson Macrae
a bit cheaper, might get opportunities at bulldogs, so an option

#7 - Port Adelaide - Ollie Wines
same as macrae

#8 - Brisbane - Sam Mayes
another tall

#9 - Richmond - Nick Vlastuin
if a defender, then a very good option, consider if a mid

#10 - Essendon - Joe Daniher (F/S)
not sure he will ready for the first few rounds, but is cheaper than he should be and prob a valuable MPP

#11 - Carlton - Troy Menzel
absolute bargain, should have been top 3, only question is game time at carlton.

#12 - GWS - Kristian Jaksch

#13 - Gold Coast - Jesse Lonergan
consider, have to wait until pre season.

#14 - GWS - Aidan Corr
u know what i think about key position players

#15 - North Melbourne - Taylor Garner
might get some game time, but i wouldnt expect massive scores

geelong back half is pretty set

Viney is also an absolute lock, should be way more expensive casue of father/son and is a ball magnet.
