In a moving tribute, one of John McCarthy's best friend's, Brent McCaffer has decided to take the number 3 jumper, which was worn by McCarthy before he departed Collingwood at the end of the 2011 season.

Despite being struck down with an ACL injury early in the 2012 preseason, McCaffer who wore #30 for Collingwood in their 2010 Premiership will honour is fallen mate by wearing his number.

It is not known if Port Adelaide will retire McCarthy's jumper, or allow one of his friends to also wear it in his memory.

There has also been talk between both Port Adelaide and Collingwood that a "John McCarthy" medal will be awarded to the best player on ground, when Collingwood and Port Adelaide play against each other each season.

Both teams are rallying for this to be approved by the AFL, and it's understood that the pies and power will play each other once a year, with the fixture to be alternated between Melbourne and Adelaide.

It would be a fitting tribute to a player well loved by his Collingwood and Port Adelaide family, to award a medal in his name.

It's a terrific thing for Macaffer to do, good on him.

+1 Good by Maccaffer. I have always liked Maccaffer and was a good player pre injury. Hopefully he recovers from his injuries as he is a good SC/DT opinion.
