Saw one of these polls in another team's board, thought I'd pose the question to you guys!

Personally, I think it's probably big Ivan - without his work our midfielders wouldn't be as highly rated as they are imo. Plus the fact that we only have one really established ruckman in Maric makes him even more important to our side!

What do you guys think?

Big Ivan Maric.

Cotchin and Deledio are fantastic, but a quality ruck is gold. Jack Riewoldt I don't think dominates matches as often as he could, and although Rance has been great he has a while to go IMO

This season, it was definitely Ivan. Giving our mids first use with his ruck work was crucial and helped them get the ball which ultimately got them the tag of being a good midfield. I'll vote Ivan for this, but remake or revive this thread this time next year and we'll probably be saying Cotch. Looks to be a leader, a gun in the making, and a second place in the Brownlow almost speaks for itself. I guess you could argue that Ivan and Cotch are of equal importance.

Would have to be Cotchin, Maric 2nd and Newman 3rd.

Newy's always been a great leader, very vocal and always doing his bit, probably doesn't get as much recognition as he should because of our emerging midfield and the revelation that was Ivan this year.

Cotchin will be in our team of the century one day him then Ivan then Lids.

How about JRoo, who else kicks goals for you? Not being rude or anything, literally don't know...

tbagrocks

My gut tells me the Mullet, then Roo, Lids, Cotch, Tuck. The difference the Mullet appeared to make last year looks the most telling

Nah that's fair enough mate! That's why I'm running the poll 8)

I agree with you, Jack plays a pivotal role in our team as our main source of goals. Other contributors are Cotch, Martin and Edwards to name a few. But without him, quite frankly, we'd be flowered. Hopefully next season Vickery will kick a few though and help take the pressure off of jack. So yes, I agree with you, he is very important!

This is hard to rate because I consider Cotchin our best player but not necesarilly our most important.
I consider the most important to be who we need structurally and who cant be replaced, so I put them in this order:

#1 Ivan Maric- Our Only genuine ruckman. e gives our mids first use and is one of the best in the comp. Without him we would be forced to play Vickery as the #1 ruck which throws out our forward line structure or bring in an inexperienced Derickx.

#2 Jack Riewoldt- The whole structure of the forward line is based around Jack. He is a 2 time coleman medalist and our only genuine full forward. When he's on he's unstoppable and he always draws 2 defenders. Without him, goals would be a lot harder to come by.

#3 Trent Cotchin- No doubting that he is the best player in the team and very important to us but structurally he isn't as important as Ivan or Jack imo. Richmond have an abundance of class midfielders and although it would be hard without him there's no doubt that someone like a Foley or Conca or Martin would be able to go up a level to account for him somewhat.

#4 Brett Deledio- A class act and close to my favourite player but comes in 2nd to Cotch which puts him behind him as far as importance to the team goes. Still incredibly important as he is an accumulator and uses the ball so well but structurally he is replaceable, all be it by someone not as good.

#5 Alex Rance- Would have been higher up the list had we not just picked up Chaplin. He is probably still our #1 defender but Grimes and Chaplin along with Astbury and Griffiths would be capable of stepping into his role.

#6 Chris Newman- Love Newy, he's a star and a great leader but back pocket and wing players aren't so important to us structurally. He will be retired in the next year or 2 and will be missed but can be replaced

Completely agree with everything you've said here! I agree its a tricky question, determining the most important player, not the most talented player!

Colliwobblers

Yep I went the MULLET.

without a strong ruckman a team goes to shower, plain and simple. Pies without Jolly was just one good example of that, Cats certainly struggled last season because of a lack in a gun ruckman.

Quinny88's list is pretty spot on, i might move jack down one or two in importance if other fwds fins the goals but as the side is now i agree totally....

Yeah, well said quinny! Distinguishing the most important from the best can be tough. And like most, I agree that Cotch is probably our best but it's because of Ivan, our most important that he kind of is our best.

yeah i agree with you about ruckmen. They really do make a huge difference to teams, that's for sure!

I think in 2012 Jack really probably was around our second most important player, simply because Vickery wasn't there and Miller never really looked to dangerous tbh. If Vickery and Az Edwards/Benny Griffiths can step it up a bit this year and help out jack then I agree with you, Jack probably wouldn't be that high in the rankings!
