ACU in general has a ridiculous girl:guy ratio. Pretty much every unit has a substantially large amount of girls to guys.

How did you guys decide on a particular degree/career to pursue? I've been trying to figure out what I want to do but am struggling a bit. The course that interests me the most is a commerce/engineering double degree, but I don't really see myself working as an engineer.

I have no idea for myself when I was at your stage and still no idea now in the last year of my degree. Was tempted with Sports Jounalism, Science, Law, Psychology and many things. I recommend a double degree though! I'm doing Arts/Economics double just because the idea of working in other fields kinda didn't appeal to me and I enjoy Economics and enjoy Psychology (which I'm majoring in Arts, but also tried out other stuff within there). I still am not sure what to do, but by the end of the year, I'll have between two pathways to follow. As I can't see myself in an office work but I've got that option incase I do need to make a career out of it.

If you're interested in Commerce/Engineering, go for it! If you find that one or both aren't to your taste, can change out of it and try something different, or follow the one you prefer. I'd probably choose something you'd actually enjoy studying and learning about, otherwise you'll lose interest in it pretty fast.

Cheers Biebs - I've been doing a bit more research today and I think I'll stick with the Commerce/Engineering idea. There seems to be a few careers that I could go in to, and it's not like I'd have to decide on one in particular until a few years into the degree. One question about double degrees though, if I do a commerce degree first, then complete the engineering degree in the next 2 years, can I then be employed as an (insert random job e.g. Investment banker) even though I haven't studied commerce for two years?

just remember Engineering is really popular and thus competitive

What do you mean by competitive? Are you talking about job prospects?

Big Mac assuming you are a bloke pick environmental engineering, you will thank me later  ;)

Haha I think I can guess why - I should find plenty in a commerce degree though right?  ;) :P

EDIT: I am now studying Criminology at ACU with Nige

Didn't take into account commerce lol, just looking out for my fellow forum members  8)

I don't even know if ACU has Criminology tbh haha, but there are plenty of courses and females to choose from anyway.  ;)

Hellopplz

Competitive probably means in job prospects though. If you were a girl Big Mac, and get good grades and have a nice resume, companies would be all over you most of the time. How my friend is working with the Defence force this holidays :P.

For the double bit, could do subjects like that but preferably mix 1-2 Com units with Eng units. Com tend to be less in-semester assignments and stuff due compared to Eng so it's a tad more relaxing in that sense. But can be easy to let them slide, which you shouldn't. But if you complete one side of the degree first before the other, you don't get it until both are done anyway. Mainly because in a double degree doing less units altogether (for one side of the degree) than in a single degree, so technically wouldn't finish a full one ;). So pretty much complete both together to get it!

And plenty in Commerce ;). Think most of the ladies go into Finance/Accounting though, not too many in Economics :(.

By the way, just curious if you're planning on doing this at Monash Uni (Clayton)? :P

Melbourne's been the main university I've looked at so far  :P

Kellogscrunchynut

Go to RMIT all other unis are lame

All seriousness though Melbourne Uni is a great place to go if you're not entirely sure what you want to do yet given that first year should let you see what options are available to you.

Yeah, ACU is the same in this regard.

For the Bachelor of Arts, they advise you to pick a range of units in first year to see what you like and if you want to continue the course, you pick your major at the end of first year. The alternative is transferring course after first year depending on what you did or liked.

Rural uni. If it sounds anything like JCU I'd be staying well away.  :-\

nah like La Trobe or something, there's only 5,000 people going there

jobe#4

what do people think of having all of their classes online? La Trobe was estimating that the majority of their subjects will gradually move to online. personally I would rather face to face with lecturers.
