Grade change form
Date:

Dear Professor,

My grade in ____ should be raised from _____ to ____ because:

1. There must be a mistake somewhere.

2. I was not well at the time of the examination.

3. My mind always goes blank during an examination.

4. This mark ruined my prospect of getting a scholarship.

5. This is the only course in which I received a poor grade

6. This mark grieved my mother (or Father). whose pride I am.

7. Conditions in the room were not conductive to concentration.

8. The examination was unfair and unfairly distributed over the subject

9. I have to work after school and nights; therefore I should be given a break.

10. I am married; therefore, I should be given a break.

11. I would have done much better if I had taken the examination give to one of the other sections.

12. Several people around me copied from my paper during the examination yet they received higher marks than I did. Surely this is not fair.

13. The reason I did not do better is because I am very honest. I do no wish to say anything against any other members of the class.

14. I know many of the class members who do not work as hard as I do an who got a better grade. I am recognized among my classmates as a good student - you just ask any one of them.

15. The question were ambiguous, and therefore, my answers should be graded according to the reasonable interpretations that I made of your questions.

16. Many of the questions could not be answered with straight facts; they were matters of opinion. I do not believe I should be penalize just because my opinions differ from those of the instructor.

17. I have studied this subject from the broad philosophical viewpoint and therefore, I was unable to answer your technical-based question

18. I am philosophically oriented to the realm of ideas; I respond to the sweep and scope of great intellects. My work is beyond the interest in petty details and parrot-like memorizing of those who are merely students

19. At the time of the exam, I was suffering from a severe case of cognitive dissonance and was incapable of coping with the stress of the hour.

20. It is not a higher mark I seek; I care nothing about marks; I think marks are wicked and I disapprove of them. However, this pernicious system of which I am a victim requires marks for achieving success and therefore, I seek a higher mark.

Thank you,

Considering this is a 'vent' thread too... Sorry for the caps.

flowerING USELESS SUMMER SCHOOL LECTURERS BEING SUCH flowerING NITS WHEN MARKING OUR 'QUIZ' BASICALLY WENT LOOKING FOR ANY WAY POSSIBLE TO TAKE MARKS AWAY. WHAT THE flowerING flower IS YOUR PROBLEM I ANSWERED YOUR flowerING QUESTIONS ALMOST PERFECTLY AND YOU DOCK MARKS AWAY LIKE I AM SOME TWAT WHO KNEW NOTHING ABOUT THE SUBJECT. I WAS ONE OF THE ONLY STUDENTS WHO ACTUALLY ATTENDED EVERY SINGLE CLASS OVER THE TWO WEEKS, LISTENED INTENTLY, ENGAGED IN THE LESSONS AND FIELD TRIPS AND ALL THOSE OTHER GOOD THINGS. FOR flowerS SAKE I BET IF YOU ASKED FOR EVERYONE ELSE'S PRACTICAL SHEETS THEY WOULD ALL BE HALF EMPTY WHEREAS MINE ARE CHOCK'O'BLOCK flowerING FULL. WHAT SORT OF MOTIVATION AM I SUPPOSED TO HAVE TO DO MY FINAL FIELD REPORT NOW THAT I AM PARANOID THAT EVERY SINGLE WORD IS GOING TO BE SCRUTINISED TO THE POINT WHERE YOU WILL PROBABLY DOCK ME MARKS IF I DON'T DOT EVERY flowerING 'I'. flower YOU AND COSTING ME A flowerING HD, YOU HAVE RUINED OF THE BEST SUBJECTS EVER BY BEING SO flowerING HOOKED ONTO THE TINIEST flowerING DETAILS ALIVE. flower.

Phew, thanks lads... needed that :o

Go talk to the lecturer about it. You'd be surprised how responsive some people are. I once asked about some stuff that I thought was marked harshly in a test and my lecturer said that, although he still thinks the marks should've been taken off, he'll give me a bonus mark if I can show that I really did understand the material by trying to explain it better to him there and then. I had a crack and got a bonus mark.

No, I'm not saying that your situation will be at all similar, but it never hurts to ask.

Already done and didn't work. I think the way I answered the questions shows I clearly fully understood the concepts. Here is an example:

Q: At the St. Kilda Mangrove forest boardwalk, there are a couple of 'isolated' Mangroves which can be seen (basically this means they are a few metres away from the 'forest'). Explain why. (2 marks)

My answer: These isolated mangroves are evidence of local relative sea level rise which has occurred not necessarily because of the water level, but also because of the subsidence of the land from isostatic re-adjustment. Juvenile Mangroves would struggle to grow in the increased depth as they would be completely submerged and thus existing adult plants were left 'isolated'.

My mark for this answer was 0.5/2.... Why? because I should have said that it was impossible for juvenile mangorves to grow there rather than they would struggle to grow there. Basically if I swapped the words 'would struggle' with 'can not' I get 2/2. For me, I think my answer deserves 1.5 or 2 out of 2.

I would think that something like:

These mangroves are isolated due to local sea level rise. Is worth 0.5-1 marks.
These mangroves are isolated due to juveniles not being able to grow under the submerged water. Is worth 0.5-1 marks
These mangroves are here because their propagules floated here from the tidal action and rooted in the mud (completely wrong) is worth 0 marks.

I asked him if he thought he was being harsh there and he just replied with that he likes to mark things the old fashioned way. Like seriously, I clearly know what the flower was happening. It isn't as though I had no flowering idea and was making shower up. This wasn't the only spot this type of thing applied, it happened throughout the whole thing. My final mark was 48.5/80 and it is worth 30% of my grade for the course :(

Did you email him or speak to him in person? Again, I can't say it will make a difference but there's no harm in trying.
Also, is he the unit coordinator and chief examiner as well? If not, contact one of them.
Otherwise, I can't offer anything else other than my condolences :(

Spoke to him in person as we had to go into his office to view them and get our marks. He is the course co-ordinator. I was considering searching for help higher up but it probably isn't worth it. I might bring light to it in the student course evaluations though (making sure he has already marked my final field report first haha) and see if anything comes out of it that way but by then it may be too late. Oh well, Just gotta aim for an overall D now :-\
