"Gram failed to honour repeated undertakings to the club concerning his behaviour," the club said in a statement released on Tuesday night.

The club revealed it had been working with Gram for months, attempting to ensure his behaviour reflected its values and said it was helping him with his personal welfare.

"Obviously, we are disappointed to terminate Jason's playing contract with the Saints but unfortunately, he has failed to meet the values shared across the St Kilda Football Club," St Kilda head of football Chris Pelchen told Saints.com.au.

The AFL has backed St Kilda's decision.
