REMANTLE has done medical checks on Essendon's Scott Gumbleton as it tries to work out whether to make a play for the injury-prone key forward.

Fremantle football manager Chris Bond said the club had been open with Essendon about bringing the 24-year-old to Perth for tests.

"We've got Scott over, we've done the medicals," Bond said on Gillette AFL Trade Radio.

"We're really comfortable with where it's at. We think we've got a bit of time with it.

"We're never going to make any promises to Scott or his manager or Essendon that we can’t keep. We've still got to work through some stuff."

Gumbleton's injury problems have limited him to only 28 games since he made his debut in 2007 after being taken at No.2 in 2006 national draft.

His most recent big setback was at the end of last season when he had major back surgery. He's also had knee and hamstring problems.

Bond said Fremantle is keen to add another key forward to its list because of the imminent end of Matthew Pavlich's career.

"It’s paramount for us," Bond said.

Pavlich is 30, and shouldered the bulk of Fremantle's load in its forward half this year.

Zac Clarke, Kepler Bradley and John Anthony also played as tall forwards but none are seen as long-term key targets.

Anthony is out of contract. "We’ll sit down in the next couple of weeks and work through that," Bond said.

He said half-back Adam McPhee is expected to sign another contract shortly.

Fellow defender Dylan Roberton has asked to be traded to a Victorian club.

if he does leave i'll still hope for the best for him and hope he has a good season

Cicjose

i have been saying for the last 3 years to recruit forwards and since they haven't they are gambling on a kid who will never play a full season and making essendon laugh at us for taking another one of their duds

kilbluff1985

why isnt Nick Lower getting games? looking at his stats the 3 games he played seem good how is he rated at Freo? was thinking of him as a trade

Ricochet

We won't be laughing.

We'll despise Fremantle for taking a cult favourite (amongst the Bombers supporters I know at least) and probably giving us SFA in return.

Seeing as you don't want him, we'll just keep him. :)

Pretty crappy to leave the bombrrs theyve stuck with him for so long finally got  him right, just for him to leave. Unless they want him to go?

Wants a longer contract ans we won't give it to him.
Quite unfortunate after both Scott and the club have put so much effort in...Still hoping he stays. You'd think with a player like Gumby the first step would be a fitness test, and to my knowledge Fremantle is yet to actually table an offer.

28 games in 6 years i think he's done  :-\

I suppose if u gotta go u gotta go!

According to Chris Bond, Fremantle havent officially made an offer to the Bombers yet.  All they have done is get Gumby to take a medical, which the results are unknown (as of yesterday).

@Cic I dont understand why you dont want Gumby.  If he is over his injury issues why wouldnt we want a 196cm 90kg key forward.  Keep in mind he was originally drafted #2 which means he has some talent.  If he fails his medical (or something is not quite right) then I am quite sure we wouldnt make a move for him.

I agree valk, i like this move by Freo. Obviously taking the medical doesn't completely rule out injury risks but i really think Gumby can play and will be a great fit here

If he leaves maybe we should set up some group therapy sessions... :(
