EMERGING West Coast Eagles young star Tom Swift (pictured) has amazingly walked away from his promising AFL career.

Swift, just 22, will take up the extremely difficult path into medicine when he heads into university in Western Australia next year after four seasons on the Eagles senior list.

The blossoming potential top midfielder advised Eagles coach John Worsfold on Friday of his shock decision to quit the AFL.

His startling move is unprecedented in AFL ranks for such a young and emerging player who is still wanted by his club.

Swift is out of contract at West Coast, but is understood to have been on the verge of receiving a one-year extension offer.

Apparently was the whipping boy for the fans at WC, good luck to him in his new field. One of my Dad's friends had a chance to be on the Essendon list about 25-30 years ago, Sheedy personally chased him but he declined it to take up an apprenticeship as an electrician.

WC fans hate him and will be glad to see him leave, I was at the WC v SYD game this year, and he didnt have a great game, but everyone sitting near me (I was with a friend in the WC members) was giving it to him.
