Thoughts

With only 5 defenders averaging over 100 in 2013, only one of which averaged over 105 (and he is likely to lose his D positioning in 2013) we're hardly spoilt for choice down back. However Heath Shaw remains as one of the best options down back in 2013.
Seemingly his main flaw is how tags seem to spoil his game, we've seen him tagged out of games far too often and those who have carried him for a few seasons have surely seen it lead to a few losses or at the very least a drop in rankings.

Frustrating indeed but in 2012 he only dipped below 80 4 times and didn't go below 60 once. Has he learnt to break the tag or is he simply...ont being tagged? Will this trend continue in 2013? That's for you to decide. But his standard deviation is very low, lower than that of other premium defenders such as Brendon Goddard so perhaps his consistency shouldn't be the thing I'm questioning.

Regardless he's a top player and would be right at home as D1 or D2 in any backline.

A quick note, hasn't played more than 20 games in a season since 2007...Just thought that would be worth noting.

Verdict

Hard not to consider a true D premium when there aren't many going around. I wouldn't say he's a lock but close to it.

Prediction

About the same. Can't see where he's going to get more points from but there isn't any obvious reason for his average to decrease. 101.

He's a lock for me.
Seems to be almost a POD player as well because people avoid him knowing he could get suspended or injured at the drop of a hat but hes as solid as any defender. Has averaged over 90 for the past 7 seasons

Adamant

50/50 for me...looks like he'll be a unique though.

Ricochet

i probably wont start with him but rather upgrade later
will definitely drop in price at some point so will grab him then

Capper

If you are interested in getting Heater then you get him at the start of the season so that when he does go off the rails and flower up ten you can trade him out

undecided vote as he may be a mid next year, a mid/def would mean a lock

May or may not start, but people under-rate this guy as a SC defender. If you look at the def options, deledio gone, goddard - lock, scotland - age? 32. Then theres not much left, has a history of being inconsistent, yet still consistently averaged more than all other defenders over the last few years save goddard. Im undecided on starting him at the moment, will probably go with two out on him, waters and birchall along with goddard.

A moral to be in the top 10 scoring defenders come seasons end though barring major injury.

Nige

Heath Shaw's under consideration for now. Still tossing up whether to pick him to begin with.

Jroo

Haven't seen many people pick him in their Fan Planner SC squads. Could be slightly unique, but would rather as an upgrade target

Yep this sums it up. Locked.

Sure he can be a muppet sometimes but he's one of the best rebounding, long kicking defenders in the game. Not many other locks besides Goddard and Gibbs.

Will no doubt start in my line-up, nice write up to mate, as you say not many premium defenders screaming out, He is a must.
