Stuff to note:

It’s incredible really, this Sydney Swans thing. This underdog side that keeps outperforming expectations; This Little Engine That Could… that actually Could.

We know their culture is strong, but what does that really mean? Can’t they just have been the best team on the day? Can’t they just have been better coached; had a better midfield, more composure?

Is it an insult to keep attributing victory to heart, rather than ability?

Maybe we shouldn’t go on for hours about Kenny Williams, the 84 year old Swans die hard who sings the clubs anthem with more passion than most men save for life or death situations.

Maybe we shouldn’t harp on about Ryan O’Keefe. The man who almost left red and white for yellow and brown in 2008, yet stayed, swallowed his pride, focused and changed from an outside runner to an inside general.

Maybe we shouldn’t keep praising the Swans veterans, the ones who came back from their pre-season break two weeks early to run time trials with the 1st-3rd year players last November.

Maybe we shouldn’t focus on Dan Hannebery, the 21 year old who has already played 77 Games and embodies the Blood’s Spirit, despite barely being able to buy a beer in New York.

Maybe we shouldn’t continue to be amazed by Jarrad McVeigh, the Swans Captain whose infant daughter died with heart complications midway through last year.

Maybe we shouldn’t keep elevating Adam Goodes, the 2-time premiership player and 2-time Brownlow winner who is a good enough bloke to let Jarrad McVeigh accept the cup, not just because it was his turn but because McVeigh needed a win more than he did.

Maybe we shouldn’t hail the John Longmire/Paul Roos transition as a faultless display of leadership and care.

Or maybe we should. Maybe all of this stuff matters as much as we think it does.

After all, didn’t our mums and dads always tell us that heart matters more than talent? Didn’t fairytales lead us to believe that perseverance and honour were the most important traits a person can possess?

A great club, run by great people and represented by 22 strong minded, never-say-die men won a premiership on Saturday afternoon.

Maybe, we should have seen it coming.
