EXCLUSIVE: BRETT Ratten has pulled out of the race for the Port Adelaide coaching job.

In a shock development, the Herald Sun has learnt Ratten will not be a contender for the vacant position at Alberton.

He informed the club of his decision today and is understood to have held talks about a new senior coaching assistants position at the Gold Coast Suns.

It leaves the Power running on empty in its search for a tried and tested senior coach.

Collingwood football and coaching strategist Rodney Eade ruled himself out on Wednesday, while highly-rated assistant coaches Leon Cameron (Hawthorn) and Scott Burns (West Coast) have also declared they will not be pursuing the job.

Tominator

Buddha Hocking may get it by default now, doesn't seem to be anybody left

Ziplock

nobody wants the job with a talentless club, that fired a decent coach, purely because the players he was working with sucked so much... why would you want to go there?

BB67th

Hocking already said he wouldn't coach as well. May seem like a joke and it will be if it actually happens but Terry Wallace did say he was interested when the job first opened up. Port really do need a coach with some experience at the moment and he is probably the best left for them at this stage.

nas

Would like Hinkley to get it ex Geelong / GC Suns

Noz

I got a div 6 under 10s soccer team to come from last place from the last 3 years (apparently the season before they lost a game 23-0 :o ) to 5th place and able to challenge the top teams.

clearly I'm qualified to coach port- I'll use my general coaching brilliance... make them run laps and kick the ball straight.

game on.

Cicjose

they might need lessons on public relations just in case your coaching tenure goes pear shaped just like their skills have.....

Ziplock

I'll make them run laps until they spew.

just like my under 10s did.

:P

In serious news for the Port job. Neale Daniher, Terry Wallace and Mark Williams are currently the frontrunners for the job. They should never have sacked Primus.

I really liked Primus, but he was never going to get the job done - maybe through no fault of his own.

But mostly because they need someone like the weapon training them.

(Yes let them all tear their hamstrings - at least we will know they are TRYING )

They aren't talentless, they are effortless, no work ethic. A coach that will train into them to work is good for a couple of years and then bring in someone who can coach them to win.

A lot of talk of current assistants at other clubs Ken Hinkley and Leon Cameron are being talked about getting the position as well.

primus was doing fine. He'd SUBSTANTIALLY improved the club- 2011 they finished 16/17 with only 3 wins, with a % of 64.51. This year they finished with 5 wins and a % of nearly 80% at 14/18. A clear improvement- he was taking them completely in the right direction, despite the fact they sucked as a playing group.

He never should have been sacked... he got sacked because of the loss to GWS, to be fair though I still maintain that wasn't a fault of him as the coach, or his game plan- watching the game, players just weren't kicking straight, couldn't mark for shower, looked slow, sloppy and pathetic.

not his fault.

Ricochet

I agree that sacking Primus so soon was completely unfair.
Can't imagine what it would be like trying to implement my very own game plan in such a short time period and then have such high expectations of success.
it takes time
