Thoughts

Scott Thompson was one of the most popular premium mids in 2012, appearing in over 20% of teams. He will be a viable selection once again in 2013, but there are a few things that will make me extremely wary.

Only 4 of his 14 tons were against top 8 teams. Given Adelaide won't have as soft a draw in 2013, he may see a drop in average. 6 of his 14 tons were against Port, GWS or Gold Coast. All of them were 110+ games with 3 of them being 140+. While it's obviously good to cash in on the struggling clubs, I'm a bit worried they may have padded his stats.

Second being he's 29, and will be 30 in March next year. That, coupled with the rise of Sloane, Dangerfield and co. may hurt him.
Number 1 in clangers for the entire league. In DT that isn't worrying, but turnovers are extremely costly in SC so it's a definite downside.

Now, possibly the biggest concern I have - His cold run to finish the year coincided with the hot run from Dangerfield. From round 17-23 he only made it past triple digits twice. If Dangerfield continues to play like he has in the back half of 2012, will it impact further on the scoring of Thompson, or is it just a coincidence that their form overlaps?

Verdict

I don't like to start with older players in the team, so he won't be starting in my team in 2013. If he comes out and shows he is still a 110+ averaging mid, I may look at him as an upgrade target.

Prediction

I definitely think he'll fall in 2013, I'll predict 103. This is a hard one though.

I reckon Thompson will definitely be one to consider as an upgrade target. Started like a house on fire this season, but then dropped off a bit towards the end. I think a few of his real low scores came from when he was copping a hard tag (mainly from Crowley), but like what we saw on the weekend I expect Dangerfield to get the tag next season and hopefully it means Thommo can rack them up a little easier!

Great option for a M5-6 IMO, but wouldn't start with him. Hopefully can keep the average around 110.

tbagrocks

I wouldn't say he only dominates the week, some of his biggest scores in the last two years are against the best, including 151 v West Coast Rd 24 last year and 161 v Geelong this year, and two tons from two these finals

Ball magnet, but a bit like Boyd he seems to rely on a lot of possessions to get a decent score

A player like pendles or gaz may only need 25 touches to get 120+
Scotty T is more likely to need 35 to get 120+

A lot harder to do consistently

+1 NO Boyd or Thommo for me in 2013 not in SC anyway

Another interesting fact about Scotty is he gave away the most frees out of everyone in the AFL. In the home and away season he gave away a massive 52 frees in his 22 games, 11 more than Jordie McKenzie who was second. In SC an FA is worth -4 points, so he effectively gave away 208 during the season because of frees, which is almost 10 points per game! :o

Will look at him as an upgrade target if he is smashing it.

Biggest problem for me to even consider starting him, consistency.
