Essendon's activity during the 2012 Free agency/trade week

Given the bitter disappointment with this season that promised so much and gave us nothing  :'( I've been thinking a fair bit about what we could/should do in trade week and free agency that should see us finish in the top 8 next season.

Trade 1: Given Gumby isn't all that sure about playing for Essendon next season I suggest we trade him, we should be able to get a mid 1st round pick (around 15-20) for Gumby and a 2nd round pick.

In: a mid first round pick (around 15-20)

Out: Scott Gumbleton, 2nd round pick.

Trade 2: We trade the first round pick acquired through trading Gumby as well as two players (Colyer and Prismall) for Josh Caddy from the Suns and the Suns 2nd round pick. Given Caddy wants out and his first choice of teams will be the dons (as it was last year, and being an Essendon supporter growing up) the Suns will look to deal with us first, hopefully a first round pick and a decent player will be enough to get the trade over the line.

In: Josh Caddy and an early 2nd round pick.

Out: The first round pick acquired through trading Gumbleton (15-20), Brent Prismall and Travis Colyer.

Trade 3: We trade Angus Monfries (let's be honest, he isn't offering much anyway) and the Suns 2nd round pick to Melbourne for Jordan Gysberts and a 3rd round pick.

In: Jordan Gysberts and an early 3rd round pick

Out: Angus Monfries and an early second round pick (acquired through trade 2)

Free Agency:

If we can sign Goddard it would be huge for the club, he would play across the half-back line and being the quality, damaging player he is when he's allowed to roam free he would relieve the tagging pressure on Stanton, allowing him to run free a bit more and he would be the perfect mentor for Dyson Heppell.

Other free agents we should be interested in are Brent Moloney and Jarred Rivers, especially Moloney as he is that inside midfielder we need so badly.

In summary then my ideal Trade/free agency/draft period for Essendon would be:

In: Brendon Goddard, Jordan Gysberts, Joe Daniher, Josh Caddy and an early 3rd round draft pick.

Out: Gumbleton, Monfries, Prismall, Colyer and a mid-2nd round pick.

As you can see the ins far outweigh the outs as we bring in 3 genuine guns in Goddard, Caddy and Joey Daniher and a good, young player in Gysberts.

All these trades are possible, just depends on whether or not the club wants to get active or not and Caddy + Gysberts should cure our desperate need for genuine inside midfielders to extract the footy to blokes like Stanton, Goddard and Heppell ;)

Let me know what you think, any alternative trades or where you think I might've stuffed up.

Up the Dons!

^^ Genuine potato picker is more like it! :P

I have come to the conclusion that Hirdy told Caddy last year to play shower on purpose this year so that the bombers can get him for less ;) Or so I like to think...

kilbluff1985

will be lucky to see one of these trades happening i think Gumby straight swap for Caddy is fair if he wants out don't blame him not sure if he will play every game even if 100% next year

Holz

no doubt all good moves. Wont happen though as you win every trade.

Monfries will leave through free agency so we won't get Gysberts for him. If I remember correctly he's restricted, so we'll still get compensation.

I hope we don't trade Gumby. I really think he has a place on our list and if the difference between keeping him and losing him is 1 year...I don't see why not. He only just turned 24 and I think he could still come off.

Don't want to trade Colyer either. We should be able to get Caddy for less now that he's out of contract.

We should definitely stick with developing our own players for now. Our targets should be Caddy (out of contract), Goddard (FA) and Rivers (FA).

Is Gumbleton really worth a first pick and a 2nd pick?

Is he even worth a 1st pick at all?

After all Hird has only offered a one year deal to him.

Also the Caddy deal is like last year. The Suns aren't going to accept a 1st round pick with 2 players that were in and out of a side when they have to also give a 2nd round pick.

Good to stay hopeful, but the trades will come much harder than that IMO

AFEV

Caddy is out of contract though. If he really wants to come to Essendon (and refuses to go elsewhere) GC can't ask much for him or they risk losing him for nothing.

Sliam

From what I've gathered he just wants to return to Victoria and I'm sure more than one offer will come from teams

Ringo

Reports in Qld today suggest Gold Coast may chase Gumbleton especially if they do not get Tippet as a forward target.  So given this development Essendon may be in the driving seat to secure Caddy if the Coast want some compensation for him.

We're the club he nominated last year. That's why Essendon fans are going nuts over him...It's like Judd - He just wanted to come back to Vic but he still chose Carlton.

CrowsFan

Do you really think a club would give up their first round pick to get Gumby? Yes he has talent, but he has only managed 28 games in 6 seasons, and 17 of them were in the same year, so only 11 games in the other 5 years. He is constantly injured and I doubt many teams would be willing to take a risk on him by giving up their first round pick...

Ziplock

I would probably give our 2nd round pick for him.

but we have cameron, patton, folau and O'hailpin so :P
