I won't be starting Swan or GAJ next year, though I started both of them this year and have started Swan in all of the last three seasons. I'll save a fair bit of cash and get younger premiums who are still improving like Pendlebury and Cotchin. I know the idea of Swan having a bad year seems ridiculous, but if that does happen, at his price it will really screw up the DT season of anyone who picks him.

True you might find players who are better value... but the reality is, because of the captain system, every extra point you get from having him over another top mid is of course doubled, so over the season even if Swan only average's 10 more points than the next best player (eg GAJ or perhaps Cotchin), over the season that'll be 20. That's why him and GAJ are worth the premium in price, because you need that dominant captain choice every week or you'll be immediately behind.

I personally haven't every started with Swan in the last 3 seasons, and I've seen how that has hurt my team week in week out. No way I'm going to miss out next year, I'll just look for more value in other positions, but I think the biggest risk is not starting with that top scoring player.

You are correct, it is usually best to start the best DTer in the competition as captain, and because of this people who start Swan will probably be better off than those who don't. I accept that starting Swan next year is a safer and probably better move than not starting him. Despite this, partly because value for money is always my main consideration when picking players to start or trade in DT, I won't start him next year. Pendlebury only averaged 4 points per game less than Swan in 2011, and if that happens again in 2012 because of the price difference between the two (which will be more than $100k) Pendles will be a better pick.

I'm sure a lot of people think Swan will average significantly more than anyone else again in 2013, but on the other hand, a lot of people didn't start Swan this year because they thought his average would drop, which shows how hard it is to predict what players will average from year to year. Personally I am being cautious with Collingwood's midfield for next year. With Luke Ball and Ben Johnson returning and lots of youngsters pushing for more midfield time I think we will see a significant drop in DT average from one or two of Collingwood's top five DT midfielders, and Swan could well be one of them, especially since he is easily the oldest of the five. Being a specialist midfielder who will be 24 next year, Pendlebury is probably the safest bet as a Collingwood midfielder who should lift his average.

I agree that with Ball returning next year something has to give. However, I think it will be sidebottom and to a lesser extent beams whose averages will drop with them having less midfield time and returning to a primarily forward role. I do not think Swan will drop off too much if at all. While pendles may be a better pick in terms of value for money, Swan does not get tagged and as I said earloer isunparalleled in his ability to pick up cheap one twos no matter the situation or opponent. This is why I'll pick him.

Agree with every thing said there ^

But pendles can also handle a tag so I'll be picking both and leaving Beamer and bum out of my starting side (unless DPP)
