The 24-year-old was playing alongside her sister at Perth Hockey Stadium at Curtin University on Sunday in a State League game between the North Coast Raiders and the Victoria Park Panthers.

She collapsed unconscious when a ball deflected off a stick and hit her on the head.

Attempts were made to revive her before an ambulance arrived.

She was breathing when she was rushed to hospital, but died on the way.

dam that sucks. Feel sorry for her family and team mates.

I coped a deflected hockey ball to my bottom jaw about 6 years ago. Teeth went straight through underneath my lip. 10 stitches and lost 2 teeth.

Wow painful and messy! I bet we'd rather be reporting that than this though :(

Nails

As a Hockey player I've seen many a ball fly past many heads, think I even seen a ball hit someone in the head. Lucky the worst injury I've probably seen was a broken arm though fortunately. It was a broken arm that as a direct result of I scored a goal :D :D :D

Though I did see a team mate cop a stick to the head 2-3 weeks ago. Lucky it wasn't too hard. Every game I play I realise serious injury is a possibility, it's a sad thing when it happens and it's sad to see such a young talented person pass away before her time.

R.I.P. Lizzie Watkins.
