HAWTHORN is confident rebounding defender Grant Birchall will overcome a nagging knee injury in time to play in Saturday night's game against St Kilda at the MCG.

..And in a further boost for the Hawks, Josh Gibson is a chance to play despite hurting his ankle in Sunday's loss to Sydney.

Birchall copped a knock just below his knee in the Round 3 win against Adelaide. He was named to play against West Coast and the Swans, only to be a late withdrawal.

"It was pretty painful and swollen, but within the first week he actually got to an OK level to function," Hawthorn football manager Mark Evans said last night. "But he sort of hung around that 80-85 per cent fitness mark."

Evans said captain Luke Hodge had recovered well after his return from a calf injury.

"He's good," he said. "He only played 70 per cent of the game so he was reasonably protected."

Well having a read, should just slot in and with Gibson out, they need some experience back there, since Shoenmakers is flowering shower.

Hopefully you come back mate  :-* lol.
