Cunnington (R)       NTH

Now the explanation :)    My team this year is hugely based on making money early. There is nobody in my team except for two premiums in GABS and Hargrave that i dont think can make money.
Its a bit of high risk, high reward team.

*NONE* of my bench are considered locks and will be subject to whom ever is picked round 1.
I kind of like having Hille on my Bench because 1. he should make quick money 2. he will be a good back up and
3. I can trade him just before round 1 and bank the 120k odd.

I know i have 4 rooks in my starting 22 but these like my bench are subject to round one teams. But i think these guys are a risk worth taking for now until we see some game time.

SOOOOOOO, there it is tear it up boys.

Morning Team_Lactose ,

I have yet to do a team for DT and I dont mind your team first up. I wont tear it to bits like others im sure.
I like your defence its well balanced and all players should get gametime early, and wheather Sheppeard gets game time from the start is important I think. Obviously rated highly over in the West - if he doesnt play round 1 you could be left short with a player as Talia and Maguire aren't guarantened a round 1 start either.

Midfield is good and having Kerr is a risk also BUT he could have a great year this season and it could pay off. I had him this season in my DT and SC teams and let me down - surely he cant have two bad seasons in a row? Plus the arrival of Dalziel may help him.
Daniel Rich can only get better I feel. Scully and Morabito should play early you would think and if they will make you money so you can trade them off later.
I guess in the past alot of teams have made sure they dont tire they first year players much all though Rich last season played whole season i think. example: Sidebottom, Beams for Collingwood played about 8-12 games each or something - but still you made money.
Your bench players in Martin and Jetta are good choices too - Martin is going to be playing early alot dont know much about him but he is tough and a hard nut and he has played against men in the Bendigo Football League in Victoria - he is going to be  a gun.

Rucks are good most of them should be playing and you will make money as you said. Maybe you could either keep Hille or Brennan and replace one of them for a cheaper player and spend more money elsewhere? You could replace one of them with Warnock from Carlton he should get heaps of time with the Blues forward structure to have a new look with Fev gone just a thought.

Forward line Higgins I think will improve his average though did have hamsting problems during last season when he came back but still should be over them.
You bench again is quite good and Cunnington and Tapscott should play a dozen games for their new clubs or more.

Anyway thats my advice and input but a good start for DT.

Hey Magic,
Thanks for your reply. Im thinkin along the same lines as you as far as Kerr goes. I just think with Dalziel there now as well as Ebert, Cockie, Masten ECT ECT all stepping up it might just take a some pressure off Kerr. AND well lets face it I cant see Kerr dropping any lower than he already is (around about 280k ish) even if he can scrape himself up too 400k and use him for an upgrade.

I like the Idea of Warnock and to be honest didnt even think about him.
As i said in my last post i like the idea of having Hille on the bench for now as i know i can change him to a rookie or base price player just before round 1 and pocket the cash.

What do you think is a good number to start with in the bank. My only worry with my team is i dont have a lot of change, in fact not alot at all 16k.

Let me know what you think.

Interesting side, you seem to have this fixation that you need a reasonable bank balance at the start of the season. Why is that?
I've always found that a good blend of premiums, mid priced improvers and cash cows ( on and off the field ) provide a good basis for a team that will perform well. I've spent the last few years within the top 5000 in the last few seasons using this strategy ( as most do I suspect ).

As for your side, I'd give Waters a miss now as he will miss the next 6 weeks with a knee injury. This however may improve Sheppard's chance of playing early. Suban is an interesting choice, he should improve but by how much I'm not sure? Hargrave had a gun season but may be overpriced now, just look at his previous numbers in years past. Maguire = no. May play plenty of games but will not be a good cash cow.

As a West Coast supporter you will have already made your mind up on Kerr but I'll be keeping away from him.

I like the choice of Chris Mayne, I think he will be a novelty pick in many sides next season.

I also think you should bring Hille into your 22 and free up some cash to make other general improvements. Your midfield really lacks another genuine premium behind Ablett.

Hi Lactose,

I can see with your selections that you are trying to make money with every player. Its a fair strategy, one I have tried in the past. Its major flaw is you only have 20 trades in which to transition that money.

So out of your starting 22 players you probable only have the ability to upgrade 10 -11 max. Taking into account a few sideways trades for injury and the rest trade downs to make cash.

My best advise is to have a plan for your team. Who will stay, who will go. Who will be a keeper and who a cash cow. Plans change but if you never even have one your screwed from the start.

Like many have said look at a couple more premos (esp. in mid), that you will want to have come the end of year, like I said roughly 12 of your starting 22 will be in your team come finals.

Hey Hawks,
I would hardly call it a fixation, I think i have asked twice with no responce. Just seeing what other people thought.

Yerr im not expecting to much from Goose Maguire either but given the inconsistency of cheap backs last year i was gonna use him like so many others did with Presti last year. Cheap, heart on the bench who will be there just about every week. Should still be able to make just a little with him.

As for Kerr, I think its a little nieve of you to think im picking him just because im a west coast supporter, as i said in a previous post i think in DT at that price and with the help around him now he can pull himself up around the 400k mark. Assuming he gets and stays fit and on the feild.

Just gonna keep an eye on Waters over the Preseason, see if and when he comes good, Always have the option to swap him for Hunt or Buckley or the likes.

Thanks for your feed back, I enjoy the discussion. Keep it coming.

looks a bit like mine, suban and dangerfield LOCKS, suban is my smokey this year he will play 22 games and had good skills last year. i will not be touching rich because he is too good of a kick, he will get the tag this year i think and there is no value there. A forward for melboure, i just dont know if they are going to improve this year. What does higgins cost? i think i might pick him up, there is not much value in my eyes with the good players being real expensive or too risky!

Kangamagic

Lactose,

I agree with Rama that you do need to select your gun players and hold onto them for pretty much the whole year so they help you for the finals, thats what i did this season and it worked wonders. I try to pick the best possible side for round 1 and work from there.
I then pick the rookies that I thought will do well and will play lots of game time.
This season I had Rich, Beams, Swift as my rookies in the midfield.
Backs I had Hill, Hurley,Rance and the forwards i had Ziebell,Walker and M.Brown(Wce).

When I look back now I had players who were coming back from injury and I thought I would take a risk with them and maybe it will pay off in players like Raines, Hentschel, Kerr, Houlihan and Hurn. These guys let me down - Raines was gone pretty much after Round 1 as was Hentschell and he came back late and did well but I traded him and Raines after 3 rounds in.
Hurley didnt play much until late after the first game against Port Adelaide in adelaide when he got injured but I held onto him and he was good for me late when he was on fire and getting game time as I didnt want to burn more trades early on.

Higgins and Hurn had great years they were brilliant for me for the whole season.
My plan had changed with these 2 players cause at the start i was going to trade them as value went up - I ended up holding onto Hurn as I didnt want to burn any trades and he was playing good footy in my team so I held onto him. With Higgins I got rid of late in Round 18 as he got abit injured with his hamstrings towards the end of the year.

But like I said Kerr is a gun player and I can understand why you choose him -its either going to pay off for you or not! Thats like with any player really that you have in your team. Almost any player is a risk really to be injured or have a bad year.
Ablett the same this year when he got injured after round 6? was out for a few games and people who had him either cashed in on him and use 2 trades to put 2 guns in the midfield and a few people did do that, but alot held onto him.

I also was playing the rookie ramp as they call it. I pick a rookie and wait for his value to rise after 3 games and cash in and then i picked another rookie who was about to play his third game. It worked okay and was easy way to make cash.

I think alot of teams will have Warnock and why not have him? Blues didnt draft him for nothing did they? as he was injured most of this season will be in the Blues team quick i feel next season.
I dont really worry to much about how much money is in the bank at the start of the year to be honest- you will always make money with your Rookies and that how i played it. But you always go with your gut feeling on a player and if his going to be worth it for you, but something you just have to hold tight and hope they come good.

Cheers Magic (Hope that all made sense)  ::)

Cheers Magic,
Again I appreciatte your input, and like you I agree with Rama he actually made sense. I have been doing DT for 5 years and have always been top 10,000 never out with a top of 4000 this year and wanted to take the next step up hence the reason i am taking on a different tack this year with the "money maker" scheme. But as Rama said i dont have a plan and to be honest never really have.

Expect some changes. :)
thanks Lads and again keep the chat coming.

Yours in Footy
Ben.

I have yet to do a DT for next season but i have some players that I am keen to put in there.
This is my 3rd season with DT and I have improved each season I ended up 13,064 this year where the previous season i was in the 20,000's i think. That season I didnt really have a plan hence the finish I had - and this season I had a plan and it worked with getting the best players as I could with the best rookies that I thought would play games.
So Im hoping to go top 10,000 next season but have to have a good team come round 1 in my book and have abit of luck with injurys and the trades that I do bring in eventually.

Cheers Magic
