is it more important this year to pick the right rookies coming into round 1? just say in your backline you decide to go with morris, ellis, bugg ans smedts and just say morris and smedts dont get picked and your two next best options maybe darley and townsend who have already played. it leaves you stranded and having to pick rookies that you arent confident about. its the same in your mids and forwards with the likes of c. smith, ledger, dickson and saad. what would you do? im thinking if it is a 50/50 just go with the gws bloke who is named to play cause then at least you know he is playing?

Yeah agree to cortez, having the same problem, have picked my team, but im struggling with how many gws players to put in, don't want to put someone like morris in my  backline, ahead of Darley, only to have morris not get selected next week, and then cant swap him back to darley. Its a tough one.

cortez

yea, i really want smedts but not 100% if he will play so prob have to take one of the gws boys even tho i dont realky want to.

Thats what emergencies are for though guys.

cortez

yea but you wanyt your players to be playing round 1. you dont want a hibberd situation like last year.

quinny88

yea agreed but guys like shiel, magner, morris, smedts etc will all play plenty of games even if there not in round one.
i mean i wouldnt put a line through someones name if they arent named round 1, its a long year

cortez

thats why you downgrade. i wouldnt want to put smedts in only for him not to get picked tbe leave him on my bench till round 6 or 7 when he gets a game. there is already one downgrade lost and 150 - 200k gone.

It's not about plenty of games, it's about plenty of games for the 1st 10 games of the season in order to fatten up for the slaughter  ;)

In answer to your question Cortez, i would advise patience and balance. Don't load up on GWS players because they are named and you don't wanna risk the likes of Morris, Ledger, Saad across the 3 lines. If you want to play it safe for those 50/50 decisions then by all means use your head. However if you have a couple of these non-GWS rookies in you your heart, then take the risk.

One lesson i've taken on board from last year is that there might very well be another 'Ed Curnow' hiding in a top4/top8 team that hasn't gotten much/any hype, did no better than any other rookie in the NAB to merit notice , yet is named round 1 cause that club knows he's a star.

Personally i think im going to fill 1-2 rookie positions per line with GWS players of note, and the rest with mature age bodies from the established clubs.

yea round 1 has nothing to do with the first 6 or 10 rounds?
missing round one isnt enough reason to not have someone in your side.. if there going to miss the first few then yes obviously you would avoid them and use them as a downgrade but guys like morris, smedts, magner and shiel will all play very early on if not round 1

cortez

wasnt hibberd and i. smith meant to play really early last year too tho? yea yea i concede shiel and magner will both play round 2 if not round 1 but not confident on anyone else playing the next week if not picked round 1

As already mentioned, you don't want to get into a Hibberd situation, where by we knew Hibberd was going to play many games, yet he wasnt named round 1, and he took far to long to reach a decent price to retrospectively warrent a Round 1 spot in your team.
