Unique Defenders - No Lake, Hargrave or Clarke

Every year there is a group of players that it seems 'everyone' will have. I'm not talking premiums here (like Deledio etc), I'm talking these ex-injured or out-of-the-game-now-back type 'bargains'. And it always seems to be the Defenders.
Three players I'm sick of either seeing in my line-up or hearing about are Hargrave, Lake and Clarke.

Is it wrong to have a backline that I'm 'very' ;D happy with that contains NONE of these 3?
Or am I being silly not having either Hargrave or Lake with Clarke somewhere in D5-7....?

For some reason I'm not convinced with all three of them either....

Anyone else done this?
Agree with me?
Anyone with me here 8)

Those picks are by no means locks.   This includes Porps.

I don't think you necessarily need to start them, but if they do go nuts, you should have a way of bringing them in which doesn't break team structure.

Could prove very costly if you have not prepared for this situation.

Funny you should say that because this dilema for me also includes Porps and Danger in the foward line. But I didn't want to complicate this thread.

im choosing one of them, that way if one does go beserk early it wont affect my team too much if i have to trade him in.

Im not choosing any of them, but I would suggest looking at the Bulldogs for defenders/

There are a few reasons why I'm considering between 1 and 4 mid pricers for BACKS.

1. There is potential bargains galore (Dempsey,Hargrave,Waters,Malceski,Lake,Conca,Grimes) just got to pick the right ones.
2. If some fire and others don't you can get the ones that are if you already have mid pricers. If you only have guns n rooks it will be alot harder to get them,as you don't want to lose a gun and won't be able to afford upgrading a rookie early. Had this problem when Malceski kicked butt in my first year of SC. Couldn't get him and it hurt the whole year as he was in top seven def.
3. There are so many mid scoring players to try and fit in MIDS and FWDS. These usually cost more and will be harder to get than prem DEF upgrades.
4. Harder to pick good DEF. After Goddard and Deledio choices are iffy. Broughton - who knows what Lyon will do, scoring likely to fluctuate alot.
Fisher - Might be forced to lock down more with Wilkes stuggling,Dawson gone and Gwilt injured, they have Goddard and Gilbert to rebound. Bock - suspended. Enright - underdone. Adcock - injury prone. Newman - most would have Lids and Ellis, maybe Morris or Conca as well. Shaw - was flying until another silly off-field prank. Can he help himself? Usually averages less than last season.

Is Grimes going to miss any games? If he's playing round 1 he will be a steal. He's had his yearly injury already and gotten it out of the way nice and early. His scoring history suggests that he is a GUN. If he plays 22 games he'll give you a major edge on the competition. Everyone is playing it too safe this year.

I agree that he will be a steal but I read he was out for at least the first two rounds. I will look at bringing him in after he plays at least two games. It is easy to find a midfielder who averages at least 100, not so easy to find great defenders and forwards. For this reason I go with two to three cheap options, two to three mid price players who are down in price from previous years and two to three guns. Guys like Grimes (when fit), Hargrave and Lake are worth the punt because they will give you that edge if they stay fit and return to past SC form.

Why is no one talking about Heath Grundy??

Has had a brilliant pre-season and not too badly priced

I have had each of these three in my team over the last month but now haven't got any in my team. I have gone for rookie/gun team that doesn't include injury prone older players such as Lake,Hargrave,Porps or Clarke and I feel much more confident for it.
