Think we will do ok but there is something still not sitting right with me regarding Ratten. I admit I have never been a fan if his from day dot. While we've improved, i believe this to be mainly from the individual playing group - rather than from a team perspective that the coach is ultimately responsible for. I think Ratts has improved but there is SOMETHING not quite right for me. I feel he cannot 'gel' a team the way say a Clarkson does. We have arguably the best midfield in the comp and once gain Ratten has (unfairly) hinged this season on two 'bookends' - Waite and Jamison. No doubt these guys are important but for whatever reason they go down again, should that really spell curtains for us?? I certainly hope not. Look at the Hawks last year with Roughead as an example. Look at the 'names' the Hawks, Pies and Cats have. Trying not to be biassed but i don't feel they are any better than our team...so what in the hell is wrong with us??!!! Ratten has been at the helm for a few too many years now to be hinging our destiny on a couple of players. Throw caution to the wind and try something a bit different Ratts. We are STILL going to be found out down back this year. Hendo is good but needs help especially with Jamo questionable. Waite HAS to play back! We have enough tall forwards to try and surely one will stand up to support the resting ruckman and the 3 smalls. I'm thinking Rowe, Casboult etc.. IMO we will never win a flag with Ratts at the helm...there you go, I've said it! Haha... But really hope I'm wrong! Thoughts/criticisms....??

Just repeating myself again from a previous thread....it is soooo frustrating!! Last week Thornton and Lucas kicked 33% of our goals..so why we're they dropped?? Surely they have more flexibility also than say Bower and another fringe type. Another thought...what were we thinking when we chose Hampson over Jacobs??

elephants

That Lucas kid is good, particularly dangerous up forward due to his ability to read the play and make space... Not sure on Ratts decision there.

Jacobs wanted a shot to be the starting ruckmen which was not going to happen at Carlton. He would have been 3rd in line behind Warnock and Kreuzer. Adelaide offered him a decent amount of money to come home and be their number 1 ruck. You can not carry both Warnock and Jacobs in the same team as they are both the same type of player. Neither can really play as a key forward which both Kreuzer and Hampson can.

was hoping 1-4, but looking more like 5-8
to be honest i think we have only really played one very good game (against collingwood) and one other good game (Brisbane)
we were average against essendon, st kilda, gws
freo should have beaten us
horrendous yesterday

mick malthouse anyone? lol
he didnt say he'd never coach again, all he said is that he wouldnt move interstate to coach....

This is where I believe (even back when...) that Hampson, despite his athletiscism has NEVER showed he is a good kick for goal. All the marking means nothing if you're not accurate. The two I would've been contemplating to move on would' ve been Hampson and Warnock (though I know they were never going to move Warnock on considering all the time they've invested in him).
And yeah, Malthouse would be awesome!! lol.. anyone but Ratts. Don't get me wrong as I love the guy BUT I will say it yet again - we will NEVER win a flag under him. I have a huge question mark over his ability to relay the messages to players on match day. Am not doubting he knows what he's talking about...but you MUST be able to pass it on!!(I think the same possibly as Neeld atm). The fact Carlton have made PUBLIC what their plans are each year was brought about by Ratten being on a knifedge a couple of years ago. I don't adhere necessarily our 'plans' for where we will finish each year will work as planned - footy is NOT a pure science where things just work out the way you plan each year. There are so many variables! (aka the RIDICULOUS notion at the start that Waite and Jamison are our bookends... NO DOUBT they are but why place 'pressure' on individuals?? Ie. if the team STRUCTURE, PLANS, and EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION is in place then it shouldn't be curtains on a season should a Waite or Murphy go down as they have. SUCCESSFUL teams move on.

As you can see I am extremely disappointed with Carlton's efforts of late. I won money on picking the Saints and Crows against us. Despite our 'classiness' there was no doubting our INABILITY to GET THE BALL (hardness). Until I am convinced otherwise, it is a COACHING issue to not be able to turn/switch players on when required...no matter how much you know or what structures are in place. Let's not forget this is Ratten's 6th year! We have the talent like ANY of the other teams fighting it out this year. We will win games for sure but it's the ones we need to win that count. To not make the top 4 this year (or even rely on some luck) is simply inexcusable!! IMO he is NOT the man for the job to take us to that next level we all so desperately want despite his credentials.

The following are quotes from Brett Ratten on the AFL website today. Is it any wonder (yet again) this guy is just not up to the task? Granted - we do need an inside midfielder BUT McLean is as good in the middle as I AM!! ...and yes I am not a Ratten fan!!! haha..

Ratten has been clear and steadfast in his vision of what he requires of McLean in order for him to play, but he admitted the performance against the Demons might have altered his thinking.

"Maybe we got it a little bit wrong after the Essendon game when clearances weren't running as well as we'd like and he had eight in that game," Ratten said.

"Maybe we should have kept the opportunity for Brock to keep winning those clearances because that might have helped us in the St Kilda game and the Adelaide game. It might have been the difference.

"I just think sometimes it's about opportunity. In Brock's defence, sometimes we've played him as the sub and that's made it hard for him. It's not just 'the player didn't perform' - it is hard when you've been back in the VFL system to come in, flick a switch and get going."
