Got owned last year need some help

I was horrible last year and am wondering if I am on the right track
I have based my subs and cheap players on NAB cup performance and some research
Would love some assistance on how I could finish higher than in the top 40,000

Backs: B.Goddard, B. Deledio, H.Shaw, G.Birchall, M.Clark, T. Bugg, S.Morris < S.Darley, B. Wilkes>

Midfield: D Swan, M.Boyd, G.Ablett, S. Mitchell, L.Neale, J.Magner < D.Shiel, S.Kerridge>

Rucks: D.Cox, Z.Smith <J.Giles, O.Stephenson>

Forwards: L.Franklin, A.Goodes, N.Fyfe, M.Robinson, D.Smith, A.Saad, D.Zorko < C.Hampton, A.Hall>

As an aside, I have joined a public league and I am the only person in it, should this fill up over time???

Baclkline: Yeah all good, can't really fault you except your spelling on Clarke ;)

Mids: First 3 mids look good. Mitchell can sometimes go 90> under the tag so be careful. Wait till rookies are elvated blah blah blah etc.

Rucks: Different combination. Smith is a bit of an X factor in your team. Still all good though.

Fwds: Franklin, Goodes and Robbo, Saad are all good. D.Smith looked alright last night too. Fyfe and Zorko have a couple of interrupted preseason problems so make sure you 100% with them. I can't comment on Hall or Hampton somone else can do that

DEF: fine the way it is consider changing birchall to a premo NOT with a round 13 bye if you can fine one you like. watch clark in next 2 nab games he was not impressive in the last one.
MID: perfect leave it alone :)
RUCK: great but better value starting ruck than cox, i would start one of mummy,mcevoy with giles and upgrade giles to cox about round 10 or as soon as giles hits his maximum $$ cox will cost less by then and the money you sace now can be spent elsewhere.
FWD: nothing wrong with the fwds either.

Keep $50k - $100 for upgrades sideways trades early on for players you might want to get in or drop spend the rest if you find somewhere to spend it its useless in the bank.

My rookie picks at this point in time are.

DEF: ellis / morris / bugg / darley / smedts
MID: shiel / wingard / magner / neale / clifton
FWD: d smith / hall / pfieffer / treloar

there are plenty of others and if the lions boys in zorko and docherty come back early they are very high in the pecking order also.

overall a good side, you don't need much help after all GL this year  ;)
