Who is considering a "forget the byes" strategy?

Hey all.

Just starting to do the numbers on my byes and with all the must haves in SC, and with the million posts on here it is nigh on impossible to have a team and not avoid a donut through these periods without using trade. I can still field a near full strength side week 1, as with most but come week 2 and 3 of the bye period no matter what i do Im going to struggle

So the question is who like me is considering forgetting the byes and just picking your best team and just possibly copping 2 bad weeks, as everyone will be taking a beating!

AS long as you don't take 5+ donuts, it's all good. My plan is to cop 3 donuts, allowing a team that I actually want to have and hold onto all season. Just make sure you don't blowout the number of donuts you take by thinking when you pick players, that is, as long as you are going for overall :)

I'm seriously thinking of a 'forget the byes' strategy. I really want to start with Goddard-Scotland-Deledio down back and Goodes-Pavlich-Chapman up forward, but all of these guys have byes in the same week. I think I'd rather pick as stronger team as I can and hopefully not drop any games before the bye rounds than start picking guys that I normally wouldn't, just to avoid donuts.

If you were going for overall I don't think it is a good idea. But if you just want to win your leagues then it is definitely possible. Depending on how competitive you're leagues are (mine aren't too bad) you may only drop 1 or 2 games during the bye rounds, but have a strong start and finish to the season.

A little patience can minimise (not prevent) donuts.

Eg Lids can wait until after round 13 and you can concentrate on another premium elsewhere to make up the difference between Lids and say ? lake / Grimes / Clarke or whoever you pick early.

Still does my head in trying to work out who goes where when and how!

Oh you can minimize donuts at this stage, but who will know who will play round 1, let alone play round 11-13. My team has at the moment only has 2 premiums missing but then at some stage with the rookie priced players i have 4 out in cases! Brown from adelaide in the mids MAY be able to help by switching MPP but who knows. Having an MPP in the mids may help but who knows if that rookie will play come round 12,13. Im nearly considering just running with my best team that I find, and just copping what I get!

That's a great point. You can pick a team that will survive rounds 11-13 now, but who knows what will happen up until then. Players could get suspended, injured, and rookies may get dropped. Going with a strong team from round 1 and not worrying about the byes should mean you have a great start, and just hope for the best during the bye rounds.

Yeah, paid too much attention to the byes last year and it was too my detriment.

The byes are 3 rounds of a possible 24.  I'm picking the best team that I can pick.

I am from round 1, obviously will have to think about later when trading in other prems.

The only posi I am thinking about in is the rucks because Im setting and forgetting them.
So obviously I hoping I wont haveto make trades in the rucks unless of course one of my bench players makes a heap of cash.

i am trying to work around the byes but its not that easy. I am going in with having no more then 2 prem per line with the bye. But come R11 when rookies have already hit their peak its going to be interesting. A forget the byes could be ok, depends on which byes you forget, all of them could make trouble.

I am going to need flowcharts, a whiteboard, overhead projector, a scientist, a protractor, a kilo of sugar, post it notes and a pen. Its going to be a long night but i will figure this out!!!!

S_Coach99

This is very generally my approach this year.

Of course I will have more than a peak just to make sure I don't cop it toooo hard one week. But like you say, everyone else is copping it too.

Is the choice of one player instead of another going to be worth it and is it have a better impact over the whole year as a whole and not just one round? Maybe....

I'm not going to get overly caught up in it.

i'm going for overall so I'll use as many trades as I have to, to win the car haha.

Byes do do our heads in if we try and structure a team from Round 1,

At the moment my initial team structure is 2/2/5 - 5/1/2 - 2/1/1 - 3/4/2 = 12/8/10 (in the format of R11/R12/R13

I will be looking at a trading strategy for byes at about round 5 seeing which prems have fallen and which rooks have risen in price.  Trading will be to reach my ideal finals team and also to achieve a structure for byes of:
2/3/4; 2/3/3; 2/1/1; 2/4/3 = 8/11/11 for Round 11. With a few effective trades can achieve this but there is absolutely no way of avoiding a minimum of 2 donuts.

So basically what I am saying if you wish to ignore the byes and just concentrate on teams and as league games will be played during these rounds it is best to minimize the donuts rather than have 4 or 5.

acroyale

It could be possible to avoid all byes if MPP ruck players (playing of course) could replace those 2 donut players (MPP with rucks) in the forward and back spots! ;)

Not gonna happen with the list of players available!

Ringo

MPP Ruck needs to be from the Round 11 bye players to work and only possible option at the moment is Scott Lycett from West Coat.  So you can see why we are saying minimum of 2 donuts.

tor01doc

Everyone will get donuts.

The important points are

How many?

How many points will a team need to sacrifice (by not selecting the best players on their merits due to bye concerns) to minimise donuts?

Injuries / suspensions and general soreness!
