Why J. Brown?

Can't understand the popularity. It's been 5 years since he averaged 100, and since then has turned 30+. His best footy is long behind him, he has played 26 games in the past 2 seasons and has been slowly bleeding SC points every year. To top it all off, he's coming back from a serious injury and isn't getting any younger. He also plays in a (most likely) bottom 8 or so side with an increasing amount of players stealing points ( rocky and luenberger for instance). The question remains, is he REALLY worth the 400k price tag or are you better off spending a bit extra for a Zaha/NRoo/Sidebottom? I think a lot of people are caught up in what COULD be (ala 140avg 2006) to what WILL be - a likely 85avg from 15 games.  Thoughts?

Mods - please move this to Players and Trades - sorry!

You forgot to mention his having his best pre season in as long as anyone can remember and this is one of the main reasons people are on him

MC

But is it as good as 2005 or 2006? Will he reach his peak? No.
If you still want him so badly then go for it. But, he's cheap for a reason and will now always be plagued by little niggles imo. I love watching him play, but won't tarnish that by selecting him and then cursing every misfortune...

pavs nose

because his head looks even fatter now that his body is skinnier. ??? surely this will improve his average....or will it just make it a bigger target for facial fractures  :D

in all seriousness i like the fact that he is going in lighter this year. think that being a bit quicker may help him in shaking off the annoying double/triple teams he cops

I think it's because when he was fully fit in 2010 he was pumping out some huge scores. Clark is gone, so Brown will be heavily relied upon as a forward target.

Still, he's inconsistent, so I might upgrade him at some point in the year.

ando_10

hes cheap as chips in a woeful side he will dominate this year barring injury

Wow, very contradictory! Seems a waste of time to spend so much on him, only to trade him out later for minimal profit (if any) and with a waste of a very precious trade!

With Clark gone, it only emphasises the burden on him to lift and perform from day one, which I doubt he will.

He's so popular because he is a known scorer that's capable of massive scores. If he's fit and with young guns Rocky, Redden getting the ball to him he's very enticing. The two injuries last year were to his face and therefore less risky selection than with Winderlich etc. There's not too many people who are worth $397k that can pump out 170+ scores on a good day.

At <400k he does not need to be a keeper.  Just needs to become a lower end premium and stay on the park.  Could upgrade him after the byes.

I need him in my team for structural reasons, mean's I can increase depth in certain areas by cutting costs.

It's not contradictory. It would have been contradictory had I said Brown is a keeper but I plan to trade him at some point in the season.

I have no doubt he can still score well, for me it's a matter of weather or not he can stay on the park. I don't have him at the moment, but if he shines in NAB games, it will be very temping to slot him in.

I know he will have some big scores, how good he is isn't the issue. The issue is how long it is before he breaks down. I love him and for his sake i hope he plays 22 games and kicks 80 goals but  i dont have enough confidence that he can play 22 games.

He was getting alot better ball back then, and the mids are starting to come good again i think

I'm not trying to bag the bloke out, or anyone who decides to choose him, simply stating an opinion. I find that too many people offer their advice with no reasoning, other than whether it alligns with their individual team choice.
I've justified my opinion, and am happy with the debate that has followed - which is actual reasoning and fact as opposed to simple opinion or a popularity contest.

Cheers guys!

Speculator

Just take a look at the retards around his price range, Milne, Nicoski, Garlett, McGrath, Vickery. Brown stands head and shoulders above all of them. Quite clearly his price is the main reason for his popularity, and rightly so.
