Starting with Big 'O' or Giles?

I really don't think Giles will score as well as Smith, and even if he did, Smith wasn't a great option as a starter...

Giles is a lock ave just over 92 i think last year in shower league. Solid 24 years of age and can score think he will easily emulate a z.smith and outscore thr majority of rookies in def - and by starting him allows you to play a 5 th mid like barlow who is less than the top rucks and will outscore em all easily!!!

the problem is what if rowe isnt playing and giles gets injured or dropped. Also i have been able to get a midfield of Ablett,Swan, Selwood, Gibbs,Barlow with Mummy Hmac in the ruck. For me its worth going a sidebottom over franklin and a grimes over shaw to save the cash than cheaping out on the ruck. I wish you guys the best of luck but be prepared it could be that thing you look back on after the season end and say why wasi soo stupid.

There are risks in everything you have just said. Shaw to Grimes is a massive risk. Franklin to Sidebum and youve just lost 15 points a game. HMac is not even close to a safe bet. So you add all that up and i'd rather just take the risk on my second ruck.I think people are forgetting these two guys are mature. And there is a big chance they will be the number 1 ruckmen at there club's this year. To be honest both Giles and O give me more confidence then any rookie's that most teams will be starting in the backline.

What about Witts from Collingwood, With Wood not guaranteed the 2nd ruck spot at the Pies maybe they'll play him a little bit, He's tall....

West will be #1 ruck at Geelong this year, but I can see big O still getting plenty of game time. They wouldn't recruit a 30 year old to sit on the bench.

I can see the pro's of starting with 1 prem, 3 rook strategy. Frees up a hell of a lot of cash. I guess we will have to wait till NAB cup to see how these rookie rucks will perform. If Giles and Co. do well, I may jump on the band wagon. As for now i'll be sticking with Burger/Mummy combo.

I just don't think it's wise to mess with rucks, but that's just me.  Two premiums, two rookies for me every time.

It will be a snowy day in a hell when I go with a unproven rookie ruck as my second scoring option. Who couldn't even get a gig at PORT for 4 years.

He has bulked up big-time and generally improved in that 4 years.
We all have our own tactics.

A lot of what ifs? You can always say what if i did this or that. What if sid scores 20 less than buddy. What if Grimes does his hammy again. You cant predict HMac will out score Giles, who gets injured, etc etc at worst when plans fail you burn a trade. In all games comes a element of luck.

To me Giles looks a more than adequate player if i take 20 less than 2 premo rucks its a very successfull move as it means i expect that extra 330-410K to get me more points elsewhere.

And then come the byes hopefully Giles is up around 350k and is a straight swap to a premium!

Have to agree. And the next comment, how do you know he has genuinely improved, did you go watch all his games while he was at Port in the SANFL then get to all the GWS games last year? I'm not saying he wont be a good pick up he may well be but the "mater of fact" mannor in which some people comment on here when it's really just opinion so far is a bit over the top.

As for the big O, well the hawks picked up Pattison in the rookie draft, does that mean he is a certainty to play because he's "mature age". I have absolutely no way of knowing as i'm not part of the club and they haven't kicked a ball in anger yet but my guess would be "The Big O" has been picked up as cover exactly the same as Pattison. Simpson would be given first crack and though i've read conflicting reports I thought I read somewhere that Vardy was back in full training and they appear to love him so if he ws fit i'd guess he'd be playing. The Big O will obviously get games but I don't think he'll be leading the ruck anytime soon do you really want to play him? Maybe wait and see if he is there number 1 ruck, a crazy idea I know.

I love you guys confidence and enthusiasim but how about waiting till we see these guys play a few games in the big league before we start making definant statements about what they're going to do this year, we all have opinions on how we think guys might go this year but it will probably help all our teams if everyone could just relax!

And on the ruck rookie over other rookies thing, obviously we have 2 more teams than not to long ago so that's 44 more players each week to choose from and a good percentage of those new teams are rookie players so things are a bit different at the moment in that there's plenty more rookies to choose from who will be getting a game, you could miss out on a gun rookie and end up with a dud ruck coming on for a quarter scoring 16 points.

No, BUT i have watched the highlights of all Giles' games for GWS in the NEAFL last year. He killed it.
I'm happy to rotate the three rookie rucks through my second ruck spot. Of course if O and Giles ave 30 in the nab this plan goes up shower creek. If they both average 80+ it doesn't sound so dumb.
Obviously a lot depends on the Nab but for now I am happy to save the 400k and turn a rookie into a premium midfielder (which is a pretty substantial gain)

Football Factory

Im not against starting Giles but i dont have the nuts...  Giles + Brogan vs Mummy (Rnd 1) Goldstein (Rnd 2) Cox (Rnd3) Jacobs (Rnd4) = Giles getting 50-60 points ?

Looks like I'm personing out. Sacrificing a back gun to a back rookie and a ruck rookie to a ruck gun ::)

Yeah :P My thought is if you're going stingy with Hmac why not save another 200k and go with Giles. Ugh, I dunno. I am saving an unfinished team (i hate doing this, like what if i go into a coma and wake up the weak after round 1. I will have an incomplete team for round 1.... :()
