ONE OF the surprises of the 2011 NAB AFL Draft was sprung by Carlton, when it selected 24-year-old Sam Rowe with pick 44.

Rowe, who stands 198cm and is an athletic strong-marking forward, was rookied by the Sydney Swans in 2005 and spent two seasons at the club without playing a game.

After a strong season in the SANFL with Norwood - of which the Blues monitored closely - Rowe became a Blue officially after being told he would be picked last month.

"I actually told him he was going to get picked five or six weeks ago because he was going to Europe for a holiday," Hughes said.

Carlton coach Brett Ratten said the success of mature-age recruit Nick Duigan in 2011 - Duigan was drafted as a 26-year-old after impressing with Norwood in the SANFL, the same club as Rowe - had given the club belief it was making the right call on Rowe.

"We identified his talent last year and he fitted some of the positions we've been screaming out for, and we kept in contact with him through the year," Ratten said.

"The confidence that we took out of Duigan this year was important, and Nick shows him that you can come in and fit into the team really well and quickly."

As well as Rowe's skills - his kicking is his standout feature - Ratten was most impressed with Rowe's competitive instincts, something the coach believes has developed out of his unusual path to the top level.

"There's no doubt that players now sometimes have to go through the system, go out and then come back after waiting a few years," Ratten said.

"But the talent is there and it's good to see players get a second chance."

ROOKIE PLAYER RATING: 6.5/10- (RUCK?FWD) - both a generous rating (KPP PLAYER) and a hard rating for the same reason. This guy is definately AFL ready and all news out of the blues is that they need him and they need him playing. While he is a Ruck/Fwd DPP i dont ecpect him to see much if any ruck time, they need him as a key position forward and will use him as such. He is strong can take a grab and kick a goal, but as a KPP and against a lot of great KPP defenders he isnt going to be a dt rookie gun for me. But he makes an excellent selection for your ruck bench if you can make use of his DPP status, if not he makes a viable downgrade target as he will play. I'll be starting giles and stephensen over him but for those going 3 or 4 rookie rucks this is one of your picks.

Not to be confused with his brother Tim, Terry is a small forward/mid with good skills and a lot of x-factor. A benefit he has is that as opposed to run of the mill small forwards is that at 185cm he has quite good hands. Milera also has very good balance and his poise means down the track he may eventually become a midfielder, where he plays a fair amount of his SANFL footy. He will likely start his AFL career at half-forward however and despite his low weight, his evasiveness should allow him to play next season in the AFL. In terms of playing style he reminds me of a bit of Stephen Hill, albeit without Hill's excellent endurance base and booming kick. Saints supporters should be happy with this acquisition and bringing another game-breaker into the team.

Lightly-built medium forward and midfielder who is trying to break into the AFL at the age of 22. Won the 2010 reserves best and fairest in the SANFL while playing for the Port Adelaide Magpies.

23-year-old Milera had a standout year for the Port Adelaide Magpies as a lightly-built small forward.

Rookie Player Rating (FWD) - 6/10 - talented mature age small forward I've rated him on a mix of ability age and liklihood of playing, may have to adjust the rating if he looks like getting early games. averaged 68 in dt for the lear last year at port pies, and again is a mature age recruit, will go up against a stacked small forward st kilda forward line for a spot which throws me off him. Watch nabcup to see if and how he is used, obviously the saints wanted him and saad, but GWS didnt so going to have to wait and see.

Jonathan Brown - Hero , Idiot , Gun & Bargain for 2012.

Not much point telling you who Brown is or posting articles I'll put down a few key points and you can make your own mind up.

1. Full Pre-Season, first in a long time, so he is fit he is healthy.
2. Gun midfield feeding him the ball. The lions midfield and defence for that matter is improving out of sight, there is a very strong chance the ball will go forward and when it does Brown knows how to find it.
3. ? I can't confirm this, but I am predicting Brown has learnt his lesson, being a HERO, did nothing to help his team and trust me Brown is a team player. For all his heroics at the ball he cost his team a vital key forward for a lot of games, I personaly think he will be less reckless this season.

Mid Priced Player Rating (FWD) - 8.5/10 - drops a couple of points for the risk of him being a reckless idiot again and getting injured. There is very little risk however given his preseason and ability that he will not perform and at his price he is almost a must have in a fwd line with a midpricer. There is some competition in the pricing in the fwd line but you would want to be sure about who you take to take them over Brown Dog.

The Player - A hit with supporters since his eye-catching 2006 debut, Thomas superseded Nathan Buckley as the club's most marketable player when the club legend retired at the end of 2007. But he has since proven that he is as much about substance as he is style, playing in a brave and determined fashion that has seen him gain the respect of the football public. Pace, high marking, freakish goals and the ability to do the impossible are his trademarks, as Thomas is regularly in the running for mark and goal of the week. He made a brilliant start to his league career, but appeared to regress slightly in the years following as his body developed.

By 2010, though, he had developed an elite fitness base that allowed him to spend most of his time on the wing where his flair and speed made him a key factor in the club's premiership campaign. He has regularly demonstrated his ability to perform during the finals and enshrined himself as a star of the competition with two superb efforts in the 2010 Grand Finals. His blistering start to 2011 left some in no doubt that he was the best player in the game, and All-Australian recognition was a just reward for his efforts. With his newfound consistency, the sky is the limit.

2011
Continued his improvement as a midfielder to the point where St Kilda coach Ross Lyon mused mid-season that Thomas may be the best player in the competition. Lyon’s comments followed a hot streak in which Thomas polled maximum Brownlow votes for two weeks running against the Crows and the Eagles.

Was suspended for two weeks mid-season for striking Saint Clint Jones but it did little to take the wind out of his sails. Another suspension in round 23 against Fremantle did, however, meaning he missed the qualifying final. Went down fighting in the Grand Final defeat (31 disposals and seven tackles), and played in the pre-season premiership. Finished the year ranked sixth in the Copeland Trophy.

2010
Transformed his game, going from flashy half forward to full time wingman. Increased his fitness base and subsequently his output, increasing his average disposal count to 23.9 (up from 17.2) and his tackle count to 3.5 (up from 2.9). Became a real weapon as the fourth midfielder behind Swan, Pendlebury and Ball, and still managed to push forward to score goals (18.14 for the season).

Was excellent throughout the finals campaign. Kicked a goal in each final, and started with 32 disposals against the Bulldogs in the qualifying final. Was Collingwood’s best player over the two Grand Finals, enhancing his reputation enormously in the process. Had 26 touches and eight tackles in the drawn Grand Final, and was one player to stand up when the heat was on in the final quarter. Repeated the dose with 27 possessions in the replay, this time ending the day a premiership player. Was third in the Copeland Trophy and tied for the Bob Rose Award (Best Player in Finals).

Premium Player Rating (MID) 9/10 - GUN dead set gun, still young and a little inexperienced can hopefuly eliminate the mistakes (twice leading to suspension last season) from his game and raise his consistancy. Can see Daisy lifting his average another 10 points. a worthy pick but a risky one as there are guys we can bank on at the same price. But Daisy will continue to improve. Has a very high ceiling he hasnt touched as yet.

A tough as nails mid/fwd that will get his hands dirty

Adams, 23, has signed until the end of 2014 after finishing fourth in the club's best and fairest.

Used mainly at half-forward but with stints through the midfield in 2011, he averaged 20 possessions a game and kicked 16 goals for the year.

"It is another show of faith by one of our future leaders with Leigh agreeing to a new contract," North chief of football Donald McDonald told kangaroos.com.au.

Adams' impressive season comes off the back of a third-placed finish in the 2010 Syd Barker Medal.

"He is fast becoming one of our most consistent players. It is a credit to Leigh that he has overcome many injury setbacks to become the player he is today."

Selected in the rookie draft in 2006, Adams has played 44 games since his debut.

Premium Player Rating: 8/10 (MID/FWD) - ok borderline mid priced player. My take on Adams is he is on the improve, he will life his average again in 2012 by up to 15 more points, GIVEN THE OPPORTUNITY. Not the strongest side in the comp but an improving one, strong rucks and a midfield that is capable if not yet strong, Adams should see enough ball come his way to have every opportunity to average mid 90's. I feel he is capable of it with a full seasson playing between the mids and half forward, more likely in my oppinion ot play mostly fwd and can find the big sticks. Not an option for a couple of years let for your midfield but would make a unique pick for your fwd line and potentially a good one, if he goes well in nab cup consider him.

Introduction
Callum Bartlett has undergone two consecutive knee reconstructions since starring for the Geelong Falcons U18s as a 17 year-old. Highly rated within the Lions' ranks, he presents a quick and agile goal-kicking midfield option with excellent ball-winning ability.

Background
• Bartlett spent his junior career at North Geelong before joining the Geelong Falcons U18 side as a 16 year-old.

• He averaged 15 disposals per game as an underage player in his first season with the Falcons and received plaudits for his hard workrate, explosive pace and penetrating left foot kick.

• Tragically, Bartlett tore the ACL in his left knee during the last training session before the Falcons' season-opener in early April 2009. "It was something I had done a illion times," he said. "I won the footy, changed direction and my knee sort of just gave way on me."

• After suffering the season-ending injury, Bartlett remained involved with the Falcons by sitting with their assistant coaches on match-day, keeping statistics and keeping an eye on the opposition. He would studying the team's upcoming opponents and discuss their strategies with his team-mates.

• He remained diligent with his recovery and even completed part of his rehabilitation at Skilled Stadium in the same facilities used by the 2009 premiers - Geelong. It further proved the young man's desire to play AFL the following year.

• Bartlett's obvious abilities as a 17 year-old proved enough for the Brisbane Lions who drafted him with their first selection at the 2009 National Draft (Pick No.27 overall).

2010
• Bartlett spent his first AFL pre-season in rehabilitation from his previous year's knee surgery before making his on-field return with the Lions Reserves side for their Round 2 clash against Morningside.

• He quickly became an integral part of the Lions Reserves side with his dash and awareness key features of his game. After more than a month of solid performances, Bartlett was on the cusp of being selected to make his debut in the senior side.

• But disaster struck again in the Reserves' Round 9 clash against Aspley when Bartlett ruptured the ACL in his opposite knee which forced him to undergo another full knee reconstruction.

• The 18 year-old midfielder was unfortunately faced with the prospect of being sidelined for a further 12 months.

2011
• Much like his first season with the Club, Bartlett spent his pre-season in rehabilitation from a second consecutive knee reconstruction.

• After taking a cautious approach to his recovery, Bartlett eventually returned through the Lions Reserves in July and was eased back into action.

• He impressed the Lions coaching staff with his unwavering commitment, and enjoyed arguably his most complete month of football with the Club during the final month of the season.

• Unfortunately time ran out in 2011 for Bartlett to make his senior debut, but he was buoyed by the fact he got through unscathed and could approach the 2012 pre-season injury-free for the first time of his young career.

• He also managed to catch the eye of the NEAFL umpires who awarded him four votes in the Grogan Medal - which was the fourth most received by any of the listed Lions players.

Rookie Player Rating : 6/10 MID - My belief with this guy is the lions want him to play, they believe in his abilities and you can bet they see him adding more of the same as rocky and red have given the lions in the middle, BUT he would need one great preseason and to shine in the nabcup to be considered, even so unless they really rate him and really neeed him a start to his season in the 2s seems far more appropriate with a mid season debut in the afl, keep him on your watchlist if thats the case because on that round 11 bye he would make a PERFECT downgrade target for one of your rooks from the round 12.

Shuey is having a great pre-season winning most running drills and set to break out this season, that said it's your midfield and you want 100+ as a minimum.

Mid Priced Player Rating: (MID) 8.5/10 - 8.5 because i think he is in for a break out year if he stays fir continues to develop and has the support around him to get opportunities. I think at his price and the fact he will be doing well to break the 100 average he is not the best pick or even a viable option for the midfield, but he will be a premium midfielder this season or next but not one of the top shelf ones, and a lot needs to be achieved and go right for him to take the next step this season.

Outlook
It was a tough season for the smart on-baller who was given time off in the first half of the year to deal with personal issues. Returned to the VFL line-up and broke through to play one game at AFL level, but was squeezed out as Geelong’s finals preparation stepped up. Has been in the system a few years and will be looking for more opportunities in the midfield.

UPDATE: Shone in the first Full NAB CUP game, looks to be on top of everything and playing great footy, consider his JS, then consider him. Not new to footy.

Mid Priced Player Rating: (MID) - 7/10 - may be generous, he will get senior games when he is right and i think this season he will be right. named in cats vfl sides best on ground 5 times last season and is "dealing with" the depression so that should not be an obstacle this season. Just needs the opportunity of getting a senior game and for his ridiculous low price would be a good pick, on the flip side the best rooks out there are probably more attractive hence my hesitant rating for him.

Sorry for the delay in responding, sometimes the requests come and by the time i do a player the thread is on the next page and I miss it.

Jordan Lewis is a gun IMO i'm very tempter by him also, I am on the fence with Zaka too.

2011 Club Best and Fairest, 2011 DT breakout season, 2012 added to the laedership group, retained his spot in the middle even after the more senior bomber midfielders returned, played through his knee issues which seem significant, rested a lot of the preseason to deal with the knee issues, is apparantly fit and firing for the start of the 2012 season...

Premium PLayer Rating (MID/FWD) 8.5/10 - OK so why wouldnt we have Zaka in our FWD line as a lock? break out year was last season and with the limitations potentially placed on him with his knee issues his ceiling may be reached. Given the knee issues will he play a role less in the midfield. The reasons to pick him? there is good advice suggesting you do and that he will lift again this season, finished the season last year very strongly and the knees may have caused him pain but not slowed his DT scoring a bit. He scored as well or better with the guns back in the middle with him. He is obviously a talented player and its a simple choice will he level out or will he lift further, i think at worst he will average 90 and play all games, at best he will become an elits and lift another 15 points average to sit nivcely above the ton.
