I'd love to hear your thoughts on Matty Warnock. Super cheap ATM and surely he's likely to be a starter in the GCS back line (especially with Bock rubbed out for the first couple). I suppose my biggest doubts are around his scoring potential, and hence, how much he is likely to increase in price.

Matthew Warnock joined the GC SUNS during the 2011 AFL Exchange period. The 55 game former Melbourne player will be asked to hold down a key defensive post for the SUNS in 2011.

The tall defender was placed on the rookie list at Melbourne in 2005 after impressing with VFL affiliate Sandringham won his chance for senior selection. 2008 was Warnock’s break out season the Demon’s, playing 17 matches and finishing fourth in the Best and Fairest. Warnock continued his impressive form the following year finishing equal fifth in the Best and Fairest.

After playing just four senior matches in 2011 between Round 7 and Round 11 but regularly excelling in the VFL, Warnock requested a trade away from Melbourne and found a new home on the Gold Coast.

Mid Priced Player Rating (DEF) 5.5/10 - ok low marks for the fact he will be holding down a key defensive role with the suns, yeah he should play every game and he will play his butt off and do very well there. But in the role he is in he will be lucky to average 60-80 at best, and while that is a good average for his type of position it is not DT friendly, for the money you want a rebounding half back type. Lake or Conca at that sort of money may have a much heigher scoring ceiling, there are many others. You would no more pick fraawley or merrit or the likes than warnock, even tho in the suns there is the potential he will get the ability to rack some possessions up in that back line. I'd be tempted by the price, the team he is in, and the seniorority he will have in his part of the grouns, I would be put off by the fact he will likely be a KPP Defender and I don't think anyone wants one of them in thier DT.

Hard-running and skilful player who wins plenty of possessions and runs the lines well. Used in the midfield and across half-back in 2010, playing eight games before suffering a season-ending hamstring injury. Cool under pressure and generally makes good decisions. Voted Carlton’s best first-year player.

Mid Priced Player Rating 7/10 (MID) Ok i give him a good rating due to his extrem cheap price, only played 2 games last year and i am sure he will play games this season. Just not sure which ones and how much TOG and what thier plans are for him. Was a high draft pick and since he was taken Carlton have not stopped targeting midfielders in their recruiting, So it looks like the blues intend to develop and maintain a supreme midfield forever. The kid gets good wraps from the club, gets a mention as training well and fully fit in the pre-season wrap. He is a risk only due to his job security, but as for his ability and skills he gets top marks. Watch nab cup if he has a role in the side he could be a great pick at a cheap price. At worst he will make a great cash cow if he is playing. At best... heppell, curnow....

Played every game, great average, a few shockers and a few awesome scores, huge max score at 142 discount the 52 which was his worst and the concerning thing, the thing keeping him from joining the top elite mids in DT are the 6 scores under 80, the 4 scores in the 80's.

Prmium Player Rating (MID) 8.5/10 - can't deduct points for his ability cant give him top marks because he just hasnt lifter his average to the 110-120 required to be a gun midfielder, don't get me wrong potentially he is maybe he just is full stop, but whether its the MANY games under 90 that drag him down and more so whether they are the fault of him or the team he is in matters not to DT. Flip a coin take a chance or go safe and don't pick him, he could elevate at any stage and add 10-20 points to his average and be an elite gun midfielder for DT purposes, we all know he is capable of it with his many tons and great 140+ score but if we have to cop 10 scores under 90 and 6 of those under 80, pass for me. However I expect him to lift that average this season and hopefuly eliminate a lot of those low scores in doing so. The improvement in the whole NM side will be apparant with ziebel flying grima flying gun rooks entering thier 2nd year thier is a lot to look forward to for the kangas and every chance swallow will be a unique gun midfield pick that pays off BIG TIME.

Hey thanks for the comments Guys it's an absolute pleasure and rather than surf all over the net I just try to put relevant information in one place for you. I aim this thread at research and try to only supply information and facts and articles that may help you form an opinion one way or the other often based on the requesters question.

I do try to give a brief player rating at the bottom just to summarize and give a vague tip, but I really need (like a few posts ago) people with the knowlege or inside info to call me out on those ratings if they are off the mark, not to undermine me just to make sure I'm not giving readers a false rating on a player. I think I get it right most of the time, but PLEASE feel free to correct me if I am wrong.

Pick 17 - Clay Smith (Gippsland Power) 180cm, 78kg, Midfielder

Smith is a tough inside left footer with an insatiable desire to win the ball in the air or on the ground. He is relentless at the opposition when they are in possession. He also has the capacity to win contests when outnumbered, which was a feature of his play representing Vic Country in the NAB AFL U18 Championships, at which he won All Australian honours. He had an excellent year with Gippsland Power, averaging 26.3 disposals, 4.5 clearances and 5.4 tackles.

Draftee watch
The Dogs drafted a bit of everything in November with an inside midfielder (Clay Smith), a key back (Michael Talia), a versatile Easton Wood-type (Daniel Pearce) and a mature-aged goal-kicker from the VFL (Tory Dickson). All arrived ready to step into training and were being eased into the full program, and Smith was the early standout with his elite running capacity and tenacious attitude, and had seamlessly fit into the group as far as his physicality was concerned.

Rookie PLayer Rating (MID) 7.5/10 - OK it is exactly as you say, what this guy does have going for him is aggression, hard at the ball and hard at the man. Tearing up pre-season. He is an inside midfielder and i'm betting the bulldogs already have him locked in as a replacement for certain similar players getting on in years. As for this season, we just need to know when he will get his first game how much tog and how often he will play, pretty similar to all rooks situations. I rate him, not a DT superstar given his role, but if played a good chance to be a good cash cow, as an in and under onballer he will score less than the outside mid types that rack up possessions and run fwd to goal. But an average of 60-75 is not out of the question in his first year. Maybe more.

he averaged 120 DT points playing for Gippsland power in 2011... has to be considered :P
