Mid Priced Player Rating (DEF) 7/10 - Has plenty of talent and looks to be a certain starter for round 1, has been playing FWD in the magoos but I see him playing back in the main game. Tricky price has ability and talent but you would/will need to have some inside info on Freo under Lyons to know how he will be used. Freo certainly are not short of defenders. Not much of a rating as I don't really know what to expect, except for him to be playing round 1, and historically he does play well.

Schoenmakers is only 21 and still learning the game but gives every reason to believe he will emerge as a strong, mobile and athletic defender for the Hawks. He overcame foot and Achilles injuries to make his way back into the side towards the end of the season as a key defender. Had a shaky start in the qualifying final against Geelong but displayed better form for the rest of the finals series.

Mid Priced Player Rating (DEF) 6/10 - Will the Hawks trust him, will they play him, does he need to do some more "learning the game" in the VFL this season. Plays as a key defender and not so well at times last year. Need time to develop key position players and there is no guarantee the 3rd or even the 4th year will be the breakout year. Form in the NAB CUP has been solid but round 1 against the Pies is a different level and a game the Hawks DO NOT want to lose after last seasons prelim. See if he is named to play, if he is for that game of all games he may be a great pick for 2012, very underpriced if you look at his scoring potential and take into account his low scoring games of 2011. Risky pick but on NAB CUP form and potential could be a good one.

Strong-bodied onballer who could break into the team for only two games mid-season despite a strong year with WAFL club East Fremantle. A fierce competitor who is strong overhead and excels in winning the contested ball.

Draft history: 2009 NAB AFL Draft 2nd round selection (West Coast) No. 23 overall.

Summer superstar
Koby Stevens was restricted by osteitis pubis and then a knee injury in his first two pre-seasons at West Coast, but he is relishing a clean bill of health this summer. The powerful inside midfielder is a touch leaner, running just behind pacesetter Luke Shuey and giving himself every chance to play early games in 2012.

Rookie Player Rating (MID) 8/10 - loss of points for job security you asked about. Hid JS cannot be considered good, he has had a great preseason is skillful and hardworking but is trying to break into a VERY crowded WCE midfield which has a VERY crowded waiting line to boot. Consider masten Gaff Shepphard all on the fringe likely to get more games I doubt Stevens will get regular games and even if he does they will likely involve the vest.

The rebounding defender came close to making his AFL debut in 2011, but spent his first season in the WAFL with East Fremantle developing the defensive side of his game. A late developer, he has shown a strong work ethic and determination to break into the AFL. Son of former premiership vice-captain Michael Brennan.

Rookie Player Rating (DEF) 7/10 - Not sure at all on his JS, obviously can play and came close to senior selection last season. Think he will get games and play well as he has in the NAB CUP, but can't say more than that as there just isn't a lot of news or write ups out there on this bloke. Suggest talking to the Eagles boys maybe LE has an idea?

Brennan is a champ. Very solid player BUT a lot will rest on whether he is selected this week AND round 1. If he is included in these two line-ups then I believe he couold find himself pumping out 75+ on a regular basis. A big risk to include him though with a lot of uncertainty over a position. Maybe have a look at our injury list and see who is on their way back from injury who would be able to walk into his spot. Keep in mind we have Glass and Hurn being re-injected into our backline this week...

My two cents, basically wait for teams to be released and look at or injurie list :)

Midfielder who played eight games for Collingwood in 2011, taking his total to 18. Was named as an emergency for the 2010 Grand Final replay, but unable to secure a regular spot. Has speed and endurance and is a good kick. Can also play forward and back.

Mid Priced Player Rating (MID) 7/10 - risky pick for a mid priced midfielder as they all are, but looking at the last artice combined with the fact it is clear Port had plans for him and wanted him says a lot about his JS. Looks like he will play from round 1 and play on ball. Could be a great pick if your inclined to pick mid priced midfielders this could be a good one. Great form in NAB CUP and plenty of opportunities at Port. Have to love that K/H ratio too.

Outlook
His star continued to shine and his fifth season with the Cats netted him his third premiership medal, a remarkable effort for a 23-year-old. His fearless attack on the ball was again highlighted in the Grand Final where he finished second in the Norm Smith Medal, polling votes from all five judges. A four-game suspension was the only blemish on an otherwise outstanding season.

Premium Player Rating (MID) 9/10 - Is a top 10 midfielder and is good value this season. Promoted to Captain will only make a possitive difference if any at all. Going at NAB CUP intensity still put out a lazy 93 in his full game. Will play this last one and will be close to his best, come round 1 you might wish he was in your team if he isnt. Massive ceiling and makes a great backup captain option to Swan or Gaj. Scores exceptionally well against the poorer quality sides. (Not all elite players do).

Introduction
Having completed his senior AFL apprenticeship, Matthew Leuenberger has emerged as one of the most exciting ruckmen in the competition. At 204cm, he can cover ground quickly, win plenty of the ball and occasionally push forward to kick goals.

2011
• After a solid pre-season, Leuenberger maintained his status as the Club's number one ruckman and shouldered much of the workload in the absence of injured team-mate Jamie Charman.

• But when the Lions lost key forwards Jonathan Brown and Brent Staker in Round 1, Leuenberger was trialled at full-forward. Desite showing promise, he finished with just two goals and five behinds from three matches playing in attack.

• He returned to the primary ruck role in Round 7 and amassed a remarkable 52 hitouts against Gold Coast SUNS in QClash 1. It was the fifth most hitouts achieved by any player in a single game since Champion Data started compiling statistics.

• He started to establish himself as one of the competition's elite ruckmen with regular standout performances. One of his finest was in QClash 2 when he collected 19 disposals, had 42 hitouts and kicked two goals in a rare Lions win. He was considered unlucky to be overlooked for the Marcus Ashcroft Medal as the best afield.

• He also picked up a career-high 24 disposals in Round 22 against Collingwood at the MCG - monstering reigning Premiership ruckman Darren Jolly in the process.

• By season's end, he had played all 22 senior matches (one of only five players at the Club to do so), and finished fourth across the entire competition in total hitouts - behind North Melbourne's Todd Goldstein.

• He was considered a legitimate contender to be named in the 2011 All Australian squad, but eventually missed out behind Goldstein and West Coast's Dean Cox.

• His breakthrough season culminated in him finishing a personal-best 6th in the Merrett-Murray Medal vote count. He also averaged a career-high 15.5 disposals per game.

• In another strong message towards the Club's bright future, Leuenberger extended his contract with the Lions to effectively eliminate any chance of him being immediately poached by new AFL franchise GWS.

Premium Player Rating (RUCK) 8.5/10 - 2 full seasons now safe to say the Burger is a solid safe premium ruck pick, finished last season stronger than he started it and has shown good enough form in the latest nab cup game after having a good preseason. Clearly the #1 ruck at the Lions and will only share ruck duties as required when resting. Except more of the same from him this season. Had a few shockers last season which if he can eliminate this season stands to improve his average by at least 5 points making him a challanger for the top ruck spot this season, with Cox giving up a lot more ruck time to Nat, and goldy sharing duties (to some extent) with HMac.
