and for our 3rd randomly generated player, we have sitting on a pleasant number 760, Jack Gunston *round of applause please*. (I was actually a little disappointed since 761 was Hawkins, who I would have loved a write up on :P )

Gunston played a grand total of 14 games for adelaide in the past two years, after being taken at pick 29 in the 09 national draft. A marked improvement was seen in 2011 when gunston played 6 times as many games (12) and added 22 points onto his average (61.3 now). Hawthorne gave up a fair amount in picks to trade him in, so clearly, they rate him relatively highly, and the general consensus is that he should slide into their 21.

The question is, at his price (303 000) does he slide into your top 7 forwards?

In 2011 (2010 stats are close to irrelevant due to the lack of data sample), Gunston broke the ton twice, 105 against richmond in round 23 and 104 vs port in round 19. However, keep in mind he was playing for a pretty abysmal Adelaide team, who did not destroy port, and lost convincingly against richmond, a game in which gunston kicked 5 goals and 0 behinds for the losing side.

The issue is, after these tons, Gunstons next highest scores were a 79 vs Brisbane and 75 +73 vs goldcoast. On top of that, his lowest scores included a 28 + 24 vs geelong, a 35 vs WBD, a 48 vs collingwood, and a 49 vs westcoast. So, Gunston is not looking *too* encouraging from that. But, considering adelaide where thrashed in every game (the closest one was a 20 point loss to geelong, the rest 30-40+ defeats), and he'll be playing in a considerably stronger side, and possible premiership contenders, this all has to be weighed up.

Basically, as far as an analysis goes, that's about as far as I can take it. Honestly, I think it's a bit risky- on one hand, he's shown he doesn't need goals to score well, he can produce decent scores in an abysmal side, and he's a third year player, playing for a top 4 team.

On the other hand, he's only played 14 games, and was recently traded to a new club.

I think he has potential to possibly be a really sneaky unique, but he's far too risky for me, especially with players like Christensen and Brown around his price range. I could see him potentially pushing his average up to the 80s, but to me that's looking at a best case scenario atm. It's more likely imo he'll play the majority of the season (for once), and hover at around a 75 avg- not really what you want for a midpricer, even in the forward line.

For me, pass. Unless he shows a blinding NAB cup.

overall, a 5/10 score- the potential is still there, but with other options for his price, and being in a new club, I think the rest just doesn't warrant selection.

Nice write-up and a fair rating Zip. Well done as always.
Not for me. For 30k more you can get Brown/Christensen and for 210k less you can get a rookie, better options out there imo.

To Ziplock, I know your doing random players, but can you do a mini write up on hawkins. be interesting to see what you think about him

I'll do hawkins in a bit, atm I'm super tired, so it probably won't be today :P

The F.A.R.K.

Clarkson said they were trying to get Gunston to bulk up as a third tall. He stands at 6ft 3 (haha not tall enough to be a tall fwd) and Clarko said their initial plans were to play him off half back (yes) but now they realise Roughy might be needed in Ruck and a Third tall foward would be a good addition.

Gunston off half back (80+ av)

Gunston deep tall foward (60 av)

l wouldnt jump to conclusions FARK

Last year he averaged a bit over 60 for Adelaide, a much worse team than Hawthorn.

This season he'll get better delivery, cop the 3rd or 4th defender and have a great mentor in Buddy.

Don't get me wrong l dont think he's gunna set the DT world on fire (yet).......given time he will be a gun though.

l'm expecting about a 70ish average from him this year, maybe even a little more.

Colliwobblers

wanting to start up the Gunston thread of Zips again, whats everyones thoughts? Now that it has become apparant just how much the Hawks wanted him, they obviously have a plan for him up forward, buddy will spend at least some time on the wing delivering to the fwd line and gunston. We know the hawks will be a top side and the ball will spend a lot of time in their fwd line.

At $300k is gunston on your radar?

nostradamus

nah, he's not on my radar at all, but am hoping rips it up big time......l have him in Euro's  ;)

Justin Bieber

Nope already got a stacked fwd line.

PowerBug

He's not in my fwd line atm, and chances are he won't get in.

He was in the first team i put together but in the hours since then i have been working at putting together my final r1 side i cant justify him because of his price, if he was around 200k id take the punt. I have been going with the thought that i wont spend 300k or more on a player unless i think he will turn into a keeper. I dont believe gunston will even if he occasionally cracks a ton. I think fattening up a rookie offers more value. For me to pick him now i would need to be convinced that he would score 85pts+ a week
