Just because he is an opener means little. He can be moved around. As for not having Warner and Watson opening together, thats a crock of shyte lol I bet you they will. The lowest you will see Wtason drop in theorder is 4. They wont put him any lower.

Master Q

They will. A lot of the selectors have hinted that he'll move down to 5/6. Plus Cowan is doing well at No.2, and we need him there.

Unlike at No.3, where the only option we have is Clarke, Ponting and Khwaja...

TheMailman

Nobody has really given reasons why Watson and Warner shouldn't open together. Yes, if they both go too hard early thats two wickets down, but the exact same can happen being too defensive

If the selectors do place Watson in at number 2, then he will not bowl. But since he is one of our best bowlers and our best batsman, its only logical to place him down the order. ::)

There's way more chance of it happening to more aggressive play though. Take Warner and Cowan for example...

Haven't you read the posts before Shaggy. Firstly, Cowan is an opener, and secondly you can't have Watson and Warner opening.

Clarke needs to step up and bat at 3, and I reckon he will. It's not up to Ponting anymore, it needs to be up to him.
why cant watson and warner open together?
and really whats the difference between batting first-drop or opening?,, im pretty sure cowan can bat at 3 with no real problems.  well he wont do any worse than marsh.
i really would like to see them take khawaja to west indies,  but he cant get back into the side cause there is no room..

WI squad barring injuries.. and i'm doubting any retirements in the near future
watson,warner,cowan,ponting,clarke,hussey,haddin,siddle,pattison,hilfenhaus,lyon.. khawaja,christian,wade,harris,cummins,starc

What's the difference opening and batting at No.11  ::)

Well not everyone can Open. And not everyone can bat at No.3 for Australia.

Why? He has before, why would having him a couple of positions down the order all of a sudden allow him to bowl?

If he bats at 4 and makes 100, he will do the same amount of work as if he makes 100 opening.
In fact with the new ball he very well may make the runs faster.

I agree with this, the aussies won't put him below 4.

Ponting shouldn't go back at three because it pretty is saying goodbye Ricky, enjoy your last few tests at three. The number three for Australia right now should be the project player (Khawaja) or one of the three openers if they all play.
