I think its about getting the right balance of proven premiums, potential premiums, underpriced premiums, rookies & mid pricers.

For example, in 2011 if you built a team heavily on potential you could have one that looks like this.

Goddard, Gibbs, Deledio, Grimes, A.Everitt, Otten, Heppel <Stanley, Toy, Lower>

Swan, Pendlebury, Cotchin, Sidebottom, Swallow, Harris <Curnow, Liba, Bewick>

Cox, Sandilands <Z.Smith, McCaulley>

Franklin, Pavlich, Fyfe, Dangerfield, Higgins, Petrie, Knights <Darling, Tapscott, Matera>

I've put all the dudd picks in bold.  As you can see, all the "good" picks are easily offset by the "bad" picks.  So you need to be carefully not to overload with too many guys that just show potential.

Give this man a medal

Way too many teams these days are based on potential

charliesheen

you end up spending more time fixing your team in the season than actually upgrading!!   8)

saying that if you pull it off, you end up looking like a genius!

Ok guys
Ive put together 2 teams.
One is a slightly more traditional team, the one which will hopefully get me far. The other team may lead to questioning of my sanity :P
Team 1
IAMTHEBESTANDYOUKNOWIT! Fanplanner squad in the Super Coach competition coached by bomber5186. Salary cap left: $74,900.

Brendon Goddard, Heath Scotland, Brett Deledio, Jordan Lisle, Tony Armstrong, Michael Talia, Sam Frost
Tomas Bugg, Tim Mohr

Gary Ablett jnr, Nick Dal Santo, Steele Sidebottom, Michael Barlow, Stephen Coniglio, Chad Wingard
Adam Treloar, Dayne Zorko

Shane Mumford, Matthew Leuenberger
Billy Longer, Jarrod Witts

Lance Franklin, Adam Goodes, Nathan Fyfe, Travis Varcoe, Michael Newton, Jason Tutt, Jonathan Patton
Jason Porplyzia, Billie Smedts
k BB, i'm gonna be harsh here mate ...  ;)

Def: not hot on Scotland at top dollar; Lisle and Armstrong guessing as 2 change-of-sceners? I think take the punt on one to reduce your risk a bit; Talia and Frost - maybe one KPP and one half-back quarterback type??

Mids: don't like NDS at top dollar (only one way from there); Sidebum only if MPP and i'd take him in the fwd-line

Rucks: perfect set-and-forget SC ruck combo; only you don't want to save cash with Giles instead of Longer on the bench??

Fwds: i'm of the 'Goodes as a late season pick up' school; have to say don't know anything of Newton; i know fwd options limited, but 'untried' (to an extent) Tutt?? = ballsy!   ;); Patton - i know SC but he will have to live up to the 'next Brown-dawg' hype in NAB Cup before I'd lock him in ...  ;)

a very harsh 6.75 BB from me
Rationale:
-0.5 for Scotland
-0.5 for Lisle + Armstrong
-0.25 for Talia + Frost if i've guessed correctly about both KPP
-0.5 for Nicky Dal
-0.25 for Longer over Giles (bench)
-0.5 for Goodes
-0.5 for Newton/Tutt
-0.25 Patton (but this could change if he goes bang in NAB Cup

though, i know your team will probably change 180-360 before rd1 anyway!  ;)

good luck mate!  ;D

bomberboy0618

Thanks J.
I think I will only have 10 members of this team in my final team :P
I agree with your points. I just tried to make as unique a team as possible :)

Ringo

BB I agree with JS with rucks.  With Brisbane picking up Hudson in trade week can not see them using Longer straight up so Giles who will get games at GWS is probably a better choice at less cost as well.
Like Lisle as he will slot into Stakers role and if he fits in and plays that way will return value for you. He also has a back forward DPP.
If you can afford it would prefer Gibbs to Scotland but that is just personal.

Ok mate here's my take on your #1 team.

DEF: I feel your backline is a little light on, 2 rookies starting onfield, I'd try to limit that to 1. But that's just me.
MID: Fairly good, but I'm not a Sidebottom fan, he's no premium as yet.
RUCK: Strong, but save the extra coin on Longer and go for the 'Big O' or Giles, who both seem quite likely to get a game.
FWD: Hmmm Newton = no, Tutt = ?, Maybe there are better options than Smedt, I just dont know how likely he will be to get a game at the Cats on 2012.

so...

-0.5 for 2 rookies onfield in the backline, how about N. Brown instead?
-0.5 for Sidebottom in a primo spot
-0.5 for Newton - get rid of him!
-0.5 for Tutt - Get a rookie, or someone better
-0.5 for Smedt - Maybe Zorco would fit better in this spot, obviosly then you'd need another MID rookie, but it's an easier choice there.

7.5/10

bomberboy0618

Thanks mate. It does need a bit of work, but hopefully I can put together a good team.

Ringo

I would not use Longer in Rucks BB.  Do not see him getting games at Brisbane unless injury curse strikes again.  Brisbane would not have traded in Hudson at his age if not planned to use for season.  So go Giles or Stephenson (another cats mature aged player who will probably get games)
With Mids watch the pre season there may be better options than Coniglio and Wingard at a lesser price. (Paying premuim for rookies in first round is a risk which can backfire at times or work a treat.) maybe just use one. Tory Dickson may be an option given his DPP.

Ok with the new prices I have put this together:

17.1k left in the bank.

Ringo

IMO I still think you need another super prem in the mids. Whilst I am a Redden fan I do not think he or beams will score as well as Pendles, Swan or Murphy 2 of which (including Ablett) will be in most teams

The only way I could do that is lose one of my MPP links by downgrading Beams/Carazzo to a midpricer and upgrading Redden.

Ringo

Is your strategy to use prem as players as MPP if so like it.  If you only need MPP to move players maybe look at a rookie swith MPP to assist eg Zorko m/f and Docherty m/b.

Personally I think Beams is a little overpriced but may pay off,

I think that with the byes the people who can have the most premiums with MPP will do the best. That is my strategy.
Dammit forgot Zorko. Will include him in my next draft. Thanks! :)
