A comparison....

Ablett is approx 4 years older than Pendles. So if we compare the two at roughly the same age, we have to eliminate the 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011 seasons from Ablett.

Ablett v Pendlebury

Ablett Awards: All-Aus 2007, Leigh Matthews Trophy 2007, Premiership Player

Pendlebury Awards: All-Aus 2010-11, Norm Smith Medal 2010, Premiership Player, 2nd Rising Star

Not saying Pendlebury is better than Ablett, just at the same time in there careers, Pendles seems the better of the two. Ablett played a lot more in the forward line, and am not assuming that Pendles will do the same in the next 4 years... but still!

Ziplock

yeah, not exactly a fair comparison considering ablett didn't break out until 08...

but you point out some valid stats- I'm really looking forward to pendles captaining GWS in 2013 and onwards :)

Yeah, we knew the ablett took a long time to become what he is so it's not exactly a fair comparison. Add to that the preassure on Gaz jnr from Gaz snr and living up to the expectations.

Don't get me wrong. Pendles will captain a team (whether it be GWS or pies that a whole new kettle of fish) and become an elite player of the game (if he isn't already) but comparing gazz and pendles isn't a real revalation as we all know gazz took a while to breakout.

All very very good statistics all the sane Oss. ;)

It is scary though.

Suns went for Ablett who was a Superstar

Giants went for Scully for his youth.

What will the Giants offer Pendlebury who is both?

Ziplock

probably whatever scullys getting + the combined salary's of power, brogan and cornes (since they'll probs retire this year :P )

i.e. considerably more than the pies can afford with their salary cap :P

elephants

Hah zip are you Tom Scullys dad? I.e the Giants recruiting manager?

Ziplock

*cough* no *cough*

and Le, to you that's
'Mr Scully'

mmmk?

Both such good players.

I agree it's unfair to compare like for like timeframes as GAJ did break out in such a massive way. That said Pendles probably has a greater maturity at a younger age than Ablett did (although all credit to him he did have to deal with exceptional baggage given his surname). Right now at the same age Pendles is probably better but Ablett was just getting going.

Pendles has awhile before he single handedly changes games like GAJ does, particularly with those long penatrating kicks. GAJ is a better mark and kicks more goals, Pendles is a better playmaker & brings others into the game with his amazing decision making under pressure.

The definitive comparison over time I think will be if Pendles can handle ongoing heavy tagging in the way Ablett has now done for years. Even at CG Suns GAJ remains almost unstoppable and given the lessened support he now gets and the limited pre-season he had, I reckon that's amazing.

Pendles isn't exactly new on the scene!

RiOtChEsS

stylistically so very different, there is absolutely no doubt how good Pendlebury is tho i thought he should have won the charlie not Swan

Hmm interesting comparison ossie, but as others pointed out doesn't say much because Ablett played a different role when younger. Perhaps a better comparison would be between Ablett and Dangerfield since Danger has been labeled the next Ablett and also played forward quite a bit.

I ran went through the stats of each players first 4 seasons of their careers so for Ablett that was 2002-05 and Danger 2008-11, and this is what I got...

  Ablett  Dangerfield
Matches7964
Avg. Kicks8.347.13
Avg. HBalls6.357.84
Avg. Disposals14.6914.97
Avg. Marks2.342.78
Avg. Goals1.271.11
Avg. Behinds0.940.81
Avg. Tackles3.562.81
Brownlow Votes99

As you can see they are very similar in stats. Regarding the brownlow votes Ablett's 4 years went 0/3/3/3, whereas Dangerfield's went 0/0/2/7, so perhaps Dangerfield is about to break out to be a star like Ablett ;)

Interesting :) Danger man ftw
