The Stadium

The Cape Town Cobras will play all their home games at the Cape Town Stadium.
Opened in late 2009 for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, The Cape Town Stadium is located right on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean.
It has a capacity of 64 000 and the pitch has been slightly modified for the upcoming WXV's season.

Trade History

Trades:

Season 2011-12 Trade Period
1. Jack Watts was traded to the Berlin Brewers for Greg Broughton.

MC Says: Broughton is a quality defender, averaging in the 90's for the last 2 years. We expect a similar output from Greg for years to come.

2. And in a massive, massive trade, Jarrad McVeigh, Robert Murphy and Stephen Hill were traded to the London Royals in return for Trent Cotchin, Josh P Kennedy and Ryan O'Keefe.

MC says: Trent Cotchin and Josh Kennedy are bound for greatness. Only young now, we expect these boys to become premier midfielders of the competition within the next few years. O'Keefe is a tried and tested gun.

2012-13 Trade Period
1. Lindsay Thomas was traded to the Cairo Sands for Jacob Brennan and national draft pick 78.

MC says: Lindsay's scoring potential is very small because of the role he plays. We would rather take a risk on the younger player in Brennan, who's shown some good signs in his first season.

2. Jack Grimes was traded to Buenos Aires for Billie Smedts, Nathan Vardy and national draft pick 15.

MC says: Losing Grimes is a real pity. He's been one of our best performers in our inaugural year, but we expect him to lose his defender statues in the years to come. Vardy should soon become one of the best rucks in the game, and with Zach Smith, should make one of the best tandems in the competition. Smedts is a very handy player, and should become a very handy forward down the track.

3. Sam Iles and national draft pick 36 was traded the the London Royals for Jeff Garlett.

MC says: Jeff provides much needed forward line depth, and is an exciting young prospect.

4. Trade with the Berlin Brewers saw young talent Max Gawn leave the Cobras, as well as NDP 78 in return for a ready made Ruckman Stefan Martin.

MC says: Martin should provide further ruck depth which was an issue in the 2012 season. We are hopeful he can return to the form he had in 2011.

5. Another trade was struck which, in a three way deal between ourselves, New Delhi and New York saw Todd Elton and our picks 15 and 17 exchanged for Nathan Bock, Lee Spurr and national draft pick 27.

MC says: We hope Bock can return to the type of form that saw him average 100 prior to his horrifying leg injury. Spurr should provide more backline depth which is an issue.

6. In a HUGE trade struck very late in the offseason, Joel Selwood and Lachie Hunter are off to Dublin in return for Dale Thomas and Troy Chaplin.

Read more about it here: http://www.fanfooty.com.au/forum/index.php/topic,44943.60.html

2013-14 Trade Period

1.
Cape Town Give: Colin Sylvia
Cape Town Receive: Jimmy Toumpas + Patrick Karnezis

MC says: Colin has been a loyal servant to the club, but his inconsistency and off-field issues have led to his falling out with some of the players and coaching staff. Jimmy and Patrick are both exciting young prospects. Jimmy should improve in his second year and I expect Patrick to relish under a new coach and a new system.

2.
Cape Town Give: Greg Broughton
Cape Town Receive: Lewis Jetta

Greg has had a very poor, inconsistent year, resulting in him falling down the pecking order. If we are to move forward from a dark year we have to say goodbye to poor performers such as Greg. Instead, we welcome the livewire Lewis Jetta. Despite a season ruined by injury, we are hoping he can return to, and surpass the form he had in 2012 which saw him average 24. Jetta is also in line with our youth policy.

3.
Cape Town Give: Troy Chaplin + Sam Dwyer
Cape Town Receive: Jason Johannisen + Micheal Evans + pick 37

MC says: Chaplin is another player that was a real letdown in 2013. We expected him to be a key to our backline but he instead decided to be a spud of epic perportions. He had to go. Dwyer leaving is very unfortunate. We like him a lot, but fell like his max average is mid seventies.
Johannisen is a big plus. I really like him. He provides another young option down back that we are keen on. Evans is handy, hopefully a new coach brings out the best in him. When he plays he scores quite well.

4.
Cape Town Give: Blayne Wilson + pick 37
Cape Town Receive: Dom Tyson

MC says: Dom Tyson is one of the most exciting youngsters now at the club. He's shown great potential in his early days and we expect him to realise his potential within the next few seasons.

5.
Cape Town Give: Lee Spurr
Cape Town Receive: Sam Reid

MC says: Reid has shown great promise in his short WXV's career. We expect him to get better and become another solid cog in the forward line structure.

6.
Cape Town Give: Jobe Watson
Cape Town Receive: Jack Darling + Lachie Plowman + Bradley Hill + Jed Lamb

MC says: Darling has a lot of potential. He's shown glimpses of what he can do in 2013 scoring 141, 120, 125, 109 and 122, but being tarnished by inconsistency. We expect that with some more development, Jack can become one of the most dominant forwards in the competition. Lamb hasn't solidified his spot in Sydney's best 21 as of yet, but I'm sure he'll develop into a solid forward/mid. Hill has cemented his spot in Hawthorns best 22, which is incredibly impressive at such a young age. Plowman has a lot of potential and should be a solid scorer for years to come.

Saying goodbye to Watson is extremely difficult. He's been an excellent servent to the club since I picked him up in the third round back in the original draft. But, with our current list, I don't expect to win the premiership within the next 2 years when Watson will be averaging his highest. We see this as trading someone when they are at their highest value.

7.
Cape Town Give: Lynden Dunn + pick 32
Cape Town Recieve: Shaun Higgins + Alex Sexton

MC says: Higgins is potentially an excellent forward. If he can avoid serious injury he'll be an excellent option up front. Sexton is a very handy player and we expect him to become quite the star.

Islanders and Cobras to play for UNICEF Cup

By Jesse Kabaletta

The Pacific Islanders in conjunction with the Cape Town Cobras today announced that this week's match at Oakley Arena in Tonga would take on special significance as the two teams would play for the first annual UNICEF Cup to help raise money for children in need.

UNICEF works in over 150 countries and territories to promote and protect the rights of children. UNICEF works in five priority areas for children (Survival, Education, HIV/AIDS, Protection & Emergencies), as well as rapidly responding to emergencies and conflicts.

For more information about UNICEF's work, head to unicef.org.au.

The Islanders have pledged to donate 50% of all profits generated from this week's match and the players have donated their time during the week to visit sick children in hospitals. Along with this, an auction will take place after the match where the players guernseys and the match ball will be auctioned off to raise further money for UNICEF.

Islanders head coach, c4v3m4n said that the players, coaches and staff were glad to help such a worthwhile cause. "UNICEF's work worldwide is absolutely amazing and we're indebted to them for all they've done for children everywhere. This is our way of helping them further their stellar humanitarian work".

The Cape Town Cobras have themselves pledged to donate $25,000 for every goal that is kicked during the match and will also hold their own auction post-game to raise money.

Cape Town Cobras midfielder Jobe Watson was quoted during the week as saying, "This is a fantastic initiative that the Cobras and the Islanders have undertaken. It's definitely going to be a special day and everyone here at the Cobras are excited to be part of it."

The match is already a complete sell-out with the last of the 42,000 tickets being snapped up earlier this week. Fans are also encouraged to donate a gold coin upon entry or head to unicef.org.au to make a donation.
Thanks to The Islanders for the initative!
And to the league for supporting the event  :)

CrowsFan

Can I clarify, will you be donating 25k for each goal the Cobras score or each goal both teams score? If it's the latter and you both score the same as last week that will be $975,000 you will be donating!!! Where does your club get the money?? :o

My Chumps

We've had some fantastic donations from local celebs like Ernie Els, Retief Goosen, Nicky Oppenheimer, Johan Rupert, Christoffel Wiese, Jaques Kallis, Steven Pienaar and many more who have become loyal supporters of the Cobras  :)

$975k.....that's loose change in a sports league as prestigious as the World 15s.  ;D

Also, the Islanders reckon that with after all of their profits are collected (ticket sales, food and beverage sales, merchandise etc.) along with any donations made on the day, that we'll push close to the magic $1 million mark. :)

The Cape Town Cobras are now proud to announce a new coaching member...

Our head assistant, please welcome Spinking! *cheers*

Someone that's keen to get on the Cobra's bandwagon to victory!  ;D

Spinking

Was convinced to join the Cobras based on talent of the existing coaching staff, depth of the squad and the magnificent facilities. :)

Looking forward to a charge into the finals!

CrowsFan

And because you weren't offered a position at the Pumas :P

Spinking

Didn't like their long term prospects anyway... :)
