But big websites could?
My brain hurts.
I'll put up a poll.

Okay so the general consensus is no standard websites can not pinpoint an exact address.

no because small websites don't have any money
Not really that but it's somewhat needless information if you don't have a wide enough user base to be able to use advertising to target their demographic.

You'd expect it would be an invasion of privacy for them to do it without consent, I'd say FB have it in their T&C or privacy settings. Somewhere.

Master Q

They can track you but not through your modem. I think most sites can track you but not to the point to where you live unless you provide that info.

Yeah I'd say that's right.
Just to be clear I don't actually know a lot about these things just trying to use common sense :P

Voldemort

you should also have another thing on the poll, 'approximate location,'

pyronerd

I voted no, purely because without feeding information in about your location they can't pinpoint the location where the connection is made from

elephants

Cheers guys!
Just won myself 10 bucks I think. Our bet was an exact location. Cheers all for your help.

The answer is it is possible, but not always and it doesn't require a GPS.

Your IP address can tell what exchange you are connected to. An exchange will generally serve 4-6 suburbs so that is what all websites have very easy access too.

Then there is location aware browsing. Technically any website can access this if they wish but you have to let them. Some web browsers support this, but not all. The browsers will take your IP and the information on the nearby wifi networks your wifi card is receiving and sends them to Google. When the Google Street View cars drive along, they also get a whole bunch on other information, such as wifi networks and can link them to a GPS location. So Google compares your wifi networks and tries to find a GPS location for those networks and estimates (pretty closely) where you are.

However, my understanding is that Google has hit some privacy issues with this in Australia and it isn't available here.

Not sure who wins the bet to be honest....

elephants

Yeah thanks heaps hawk. I dunno, I guess I win cos you have to give permission to pinpoint anything.

Master Q

Google actually track you while you are on FF.

I'm running Firefox and Ghostery tells me that the following are tracking me (I have turned all off):

Google Adsense
Google Analytics
(And, not sure what this is) Tribal Fusion

Q can I have a link to Ghostery?

you still win, hawk's points apply to internet connections in general, there is no way to pinpoint a person's location from their wifi router (unless if you are like next door, in which there would be no point)

Boomz

If I check my IP it shows I'm in a different area completely :-X

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/ghostery/?src=userprofile

Strongly advise you use Firefox. May be a touch slower than Chrome but It's way more powerful.
