A friend and I were having a debate Bout whether or not websites are able to access your home address through your wifi modem. Any computer whiz's here?

And on a side note, is there any other information that websites/companies can access from the wifi router you use? Cheers. Somebody could be winning me $10 ;D

AFEV

Well I'm not exactly a whiz but my understanding is they can see your IP which will give them an extremely vague idea of where you are
For instance what country you live in.

Probably wrong though :P

this is correct as far as my understanding goes, unless you broadcast your address on the internet, or have a program allowing people to use GPS to track your position (I know of iphone aps which can do this), I don't think your address is trackable

facebook can just about pin point you within a kilometre I think

elephants

Sorry AFEV is Sid.
Voldie I missed your post but I'll thank you now for the reply.
Cheers pyro. I wouldn't broadcast my address anywhere. This is assuming my I pod hasn't got any gps type apps too.
Yeah Facebook isn't involved I is just your average website. Maybe FF for example?

Master Q

Well I don't think m0nty would but I'm sure it's possible.

Facebook target their ads towards you depending on your History and where you live.

elephants

Wow that's creepy. Still uncertain as to whether or not they can pinpoint addresses though?

Your Ipod wouldn't have the tracking app on it if you haven't downloaded it, and I think to track it you need to set the app up with a computer which you would track from

Also what websites do has nothing to do with your wifi, if they can track you through facebook on your wifi, they can track you through facebook on any internet connection

They do that using cookies which is an entirely different thing.

elephants

Okay so the general consensus is no standard websites can not pinpoint an exact address.

no because small websites don't have any money
