Hi guys/girls. I've got the family on my back, about getting another dog. My shepherd is 11 and deaf as a door nail, We've had shepherds aii our lives, and the missus and lad want another one, but my daughter wants a Rotti. The dog still has to be a watchdog as well as a family pet, so i/we just want suggestions on other breeds and their quirks (good or bad). Cheers people any feedback would be great PS - would my shepherd accept a pup, as previously, one has passed on before we got the next one

Ziplock

we've had an australian cattle dog cross kelpie for 16 years now- the most intelligent dog I've ever met, and extremely loyal as well. I dunno if it's the breeding, or if she's just a freak, but if you could get a dog like her you'd be damned happy :P

Cookie Monster

German Sheppards have gotta be the best, they love you as mchnas you live them, they are a family pet and a watch dog.

get one of them :)

another good watch dog, pitbull, atleast you won't get robbed ;)

Kelpies, cattle dogs require a lot of exercise though so you have to walk them everyday, most likely twice a day.

Rotti's are actually quite a passive dog, its just their size that most people are afraid of.

Border Collies are another highly intelligent dog (like kelpies, cattle dogs) but dont need as much exercise as them.  They are also a great guard dog.

German Sheppard is very similar to the Border Collie in that they are highly intelligent and a great guard dog.

Brittish Staffies look mean but are a very family friendly dog and unless its about food, they are quite dumb.

Pitbulls (if trained correctly) are also a very affectionate dog - the media beat these dogs up and because of that they have a bad rep.  Only buy one of these from a reputed breeder - I cannot stress this enough.  Do not buy this type of dog from a person advertising in the local rag or a pet shop.  I also dont recommend this dog if you are not experienced with dogs and able to be dominate over this dog (this includes all members of the family).

Going off what Valk said be careful not to get a dog that is too smart. If you're not particularly firm they can end up causing havoc :o

Labrador & Golden Retrievers are popular for a reason as well.

Any dog can cause havoc if you dont treat them like a dog.  If you try to treat them as a family member then you will be walked all over (in very short time).

Thanks so far for the feedback guys, but i really also need to know if my dog would accept a new pup, or would he be terratorial (sic) towards it ? :-\

Hard to really know how it will react until you actually get one. I personally would go a British Staffy, or a Staffy x Mastiff. Great dogs.

The key to this is treating both dogs the same - you cannot play favourites. As soon as you do they will both play up.

Mastiff are a big dog but cool :)  I am personally a huge fan of British Staffies (have had 3 now)

LaHug

I had a rottie x kelpie and she was very affectionate and had the size a look of a big guard dog (although she was soft as anything because we treated her like a baby).
Probably not the easiest cross to come across, but something like that would make a great dog!

Another smart but excellent guard dog is a Rhodesian Ridgeback.  This is another dog that shouldnt be for an inexperienced dog owner.

Ziplock

we have a ridgeback cross doberman.

lol.

Is actually  a really sweet dog though... she does just frightened easily when people scream though, and this causes her to bark, and then they scream more...

it's really a vicious cycle...

+1 to Cattledog

We're not sure if ours is purebred or part kelpie... because the dad or mum was pure bred heeler (cattle dog) but the other looked like they might have been a bit kelpie, but I think our dog is pure cattle dog.

Super intelligent dog, he has learnt how to play by himself... flicks sticks up w/ his snout in long grass so he can throw sticks for himself to catch

One of my friends has a Ridgeback named Cougar.
Doesn't like new people at all :(
