The Coach's Analysis

The Cairo Sands travelled to France to take on the PNL Reindeers in what was said to be a season defining match...and it's only Round 3! After a very nice score and and our opponents having a some bad luck through Luke McPharlin not adding to their home ground advantage, Cairo got up in what was an emphatic victory. The result was sweetened by the fact that this was Cairo's first win of the season. Captain for the week - Pearce Hanley put in an amazing performance and was supported well by a mammoth effort from David Armitage and a great output from new recruit Clancee Pearce. Other solid contributors were Nick Malceski, David Hale and Richard Douglas. Adding to celebrations this week is the news that the reserves - the Alexandria Hieroglyphics triumped again and sit atop of the reserves ladder while remaining undefeated 3 rounds in. Next week, the Sands host the Dublin Destroyers at Borg El Arab which saves the fans a plane trip. We hope for a great turn-out. And to all those doubters out there. Remember this: you're all in da-Nile!

Another nice win on the wkend boys  :)

Yeah, it's good. Need to get the win against Berlin this week. But yeah, Alexandria are unstoppable.  ;)

The Cairo Sands Trade Breakdown with Nige

Trade 5
Cairo trade: Brad Sewell and Chris Newman
Buenos Aires trade: Pick 37 and Pick 55
Comment: Cairo were looking to not only reduce the cap as required by the league but also move on some of our older players. The Buenos Aires Armadillos, an older team, required depth and showed interest quite early in the piece when we put Brad and Chris on the table. As we're looking to achieve a nice balance of youth and experience, we have decided to gain more picks to use in the draft.

Trade 7
Cairo trade: Danny Stanley, Matt Jones, Lewis Stevenson and Pick 88
Beijing trade: Sam Kerridge and Pick 23
Comment: In another effort to reduce our cap, being the team furthest over it and tasked with culling our list, we found the perfect trade for both our club and the Beijing Thunder who are in desperate need of players to get themselves above the minimum cap. Danny Stanley was a regular contributor, but we felt he had currency. Matt Jones, our first pick in the 2012 National Draft played a few games, but eventually got edged out of our side. Lewis Stevenson, like Matt found himself on the outer and has join Danny and Matt in packing his bags and heading to Asia along with Pick 88 in the Draft this year. Sam is a promising youngster and Beijing's second round selection is a bonus.

Trade 8
Berlin trades: Matt Stokes, John Butcher and Jamie Cripps
Cairo trade: Nick Dal Santo and Lindsay Thomas
Comment: This trade was one that wasn't too easy to negotiate, as the players involved were fantastic members of our best XV in 2013. Nick, however, was on the table and Berlin were the team able to offer us the best deal for his services. Lindsay caused us a bit of heartache, but also showed consistency when needed. Matt, John and Jamie are all players that we, at Cairo, identify as being good players for our team moving forward. With John to increase our forward depth, Matt to be a replacement for Lindsay and Jamie to hopefully play forward, but also be a midfield option.

Trade 10
Cape Town trade: Troy Chaplin and Sam Dwyer
Cairo trade: Jason Johannisen, Michael Evans and Pick 37
Comment: With the all the movements and imminent delistings, we saw our defense and forward line as needing reinforcements. To get the reinforcements, we have had to part ways with promising youngster Jason Johannisen to got agonising close to a senior debut before injury ended his season and Michael Evans, our only 2013 WXV Rising Star nominee as well as Pick 37, received from Buenos Aires. In return, we welcome Troy Chaplin and Sam Dwyer to the club, the former to help the boys in defense, while the latter will get familiar with both the midfield group and our forwards.

Trade 28
Dublin trade: Jed Anderson
Cairo trade: Shaun Grigg
Comment: Dublin wanted an established mid and offered us Jed Anderson. Both of us at Cairo really like Anderson and felt we needed to get a little bit more youth into the team. Grigg's a solid high 80s/low 90s player while Anderson's shown and both clubs believe he can match or even better that in time.

Trade 39:
New Delhi trade: Nick Duigan
Cairo trade: Rohan Bail and Pick 34
Comment: Rohan Bail was a player that we were considering delisting, while Pick 34 was a pick we were happy to move on we already has another pick in the same round to use. Nick Duigan is a player who should hopefully serve as handy depth for our squad.

Trade 42:
New York trade: Dion Prestia, Jonathan Giles, Brodie Smith and Pick 65
Cairo trade: David Armitage, Mathew Stokes, Josh Gibson, Jed Anderson and Pick 55
Comment: This trade was one that took a bit of work, but both parties have come away happy with the result. Dion and Jon were both targets for the club and so pursued their services. In the process, we had to part ways with two of our solid performers in Armo and Gibbo, as well as moving on Matty and Jed before they could even unpack their bags. We feel that Dion will be a perfect addition to our midfield while Jon can work well with Mummy. Brodie is a player we see as a solid replacement in our squad for Gibbo and feel that Brodie can become a similar performer to that of which Gibbo was for us.

No Cairo trades were rejected, but Trades 5 and 7 were referred to the league administrator but were passed upon further assessment. We welcome Sam K, John, Jamie, Troy, Sam D, Nick, Dion, Jon and Brodie to the club, while wishing Brad, Chris, Danny, Matt, Lewis, Dal, Lindsay, Jason, Michael, Shaun, Rohan, Dave, Matty, Josh and Jed all the best in their future endeavours at their new clubs.
