I couldn't work out how to get 4 for a while but figured it out :)

The equation is written like this:
1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1-1+1+1+1+1+1+1x0 = ?
To make that equal 4 just add a few brackets so it looks like this:
(1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1)-(1+1+1+1+1+1)+1x0 = ?

thats the reason in tests even when i passed i could of done beetter i read half most of the time and answer...lol

And anyway it wouldn't matter which way you read it you should get the same answer ;)

I think people just put 0 when they skim the question, and without really thinking about it.
Also, I was always taught that it was BOMDAS, not BODMAS  :-\

Defidently BODMAS, but like i said earlier, somewhere it's been changed to BEDMAS. I learnt it as BODMAS until year 4, then BEDMAS. The 'E' is for exponents, like powers and shower.

So there is more than one way of doing this. It depends on the syntax standard that you follow, specifically with regards to implicit multiplication which is what is occurring here. By implicit I mean 2a as opposed to 2 x a.

The standard followed in Victorian schools at least is to evaluate what is inside the brackets first, the left to right for multiplication and division, followed by subtraction and addition:

= 6 / 2(2 + 1)
= 6 / 2 x 3
= 3 x 3
= 9

The other method is to treat the implicit multiplication as part of the brackets:

= 6 / 2(2 + 1)
= 6 / (2 x 2 + 2 x 1)
= 6 / (4 + 2)
= 6 / 6
= 1

Now I only understand this at a very basic level, but from what I understand the first is generally the followed standard, however, it is not used exclusively and is a contentious issue for mathematicians. Thankfully I don't associate myself with those types as this would be a very boring pub discussion topic...

 I answered 0, and i'll explain why. No.1-- I've been out of school for 34 years. No2-- i had 15 beers in the fridge this morning - drank 10 , dropped 1,- drank the rest. Just asked the missus for a beer and she said there is 0 left. So i figured 0 is 0 (at least in the fridge- bugger)
