The father-son selections have been finalized for the 2012 National Draft.

Sydney will take Tom Mitchell, son of Barry Mitchell at pick 21.

Carlton will take Dylan Buckley, son of premiership player Jim Buckley, with their final pick (currently at pick 98).

Finally, Geelong will take Jed Bews, son of Andrew Bews, with their final pick (currently at pick 102).

For those that don't understand the process behind father-son selections, here is the process.

Firstly, clubs have to lodge their father-son selections for the upcoming draft. Once the deadline for these lodgings have passed (the Friday before trade week), clubs will then meet on the Monday of trade week (today), for the complicated part, the bidding process. This process determines what pick that club will have to pick their nominated player at. The AFL has a good explanation of this bidding process...

QuoteUnder current father-son rules, each other club in the competition, with the exception of GWS, has the option to bid, in reverse ladder order, for nominated father-son players.

If a bid is made, the club that nominated the father-son player must use its next available selection if it wishes to retain its hold on the player.

For example, Fremantle pledged to use its first-round pick at the coming NAB AFL Draft (sixteenth overall) to select Mitchell, which means the Swans must use their next live pick (21st overall) if they want to claim the player.

Following on from that, since no club placed a bid for either Dylan Buckley or Jed Bews, Carlton and Geelong are free to use any pick (usually the final pick) to take their respective player.

About 12 months ago Carltom seemed very keen on Tom Mitchell. I know his dad fell out with the club a bit after the whole Dennis Pagen coaching debarcle (they hated each other & Barry was the VFL coach!) but does anyone know whey they backed off?

Not sure but I know Sydney have had their eye on Mitchell for a while! Lucky to get him at #21 also.
