'Maric has long been linked to Richmond, where he should go in return for a draft pick, while Gunston has declared Hawthorn as his club of choice. But North Melbourne has been circling around the forward as well.'

David Noble said on radio last night that the crows are expecting a first round pick or player of similar value for Gunston, and arent going to let him dictate what club he goes to unless they are willing to come to the party re their offer.

The Hawks got ripped off

http://www.afl.com.au/news/newsarticle/tabid/208/newsid/124995/default.aspx

Dont think they did, beyond top 10, this year's draft isnt very deep so Hawks wouldnt have minded giving away number 24

Cicjose

giving away 3 draft picks to pick an unproven player who wanted to go home?

Voldemort

Again, could pay off considering he is only 19 + draft isnt great this year so they wouldn't be too disappointed with letting go of 3 draft picks. They already have a set of youngsters (Shiels, Smith, etc.) who will carry them forward. Jack Gunston is like a project which could pay off, or could go very badly

DG

the crows gave their 3rd and 4th round pick as well. I think it is a pretty reasonable trade.

"shallow" draft is a poor excuse. You get the right player, train them right, and doesn't matter if they have massive skills to begin with, they can still become hugely valuable players.

i.e. Is there really much difference between top 10 picks in Conca, Caddy or Prestia, against a Fasolo, Michie or Alex Johnson all picked up in the 40s onwards?

Agree 100% Ossie - Simon Black was pick 31 and even more Rockcliff was not selected in the Draft but was selected as Brisbanes last spot in the 2008 Pre Season Draft. (A number must be scratching their heads with this one)  Both confirmation that you can get stars with late picks.

Indeed Ringo! Of course you need your stars, but you are never going to have 22 Judds, Pendleburys or Franklins.

Other great examples of late picks are Hird at 79 and Chris Grant at 105!

Win--Win.
Crows get more than they expected, plus Hawks give away picks that they don't need and get a great developing Utility.
