As you may or may not know, lately there's been some angst about the poorer clubs getting AFL handouts, and the "Fat cats" as they've been described by Brayshaw do not like it. In the article today someone wrote in to Mike Sheehan this:

Poor roo boys....

Flawed logic here btw, the reason the pies get Queens and ANZAC is because we're popular. We're not popular BECAUSE we have Queen's/ANZAC

Also, look at this Friday nights game! St. Kilda screamed out during the week that not playing Collingwood at the MCG was costing them money. Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

Sick and tired of clubs on hand doging about how many MCG games Collingwood get, and then doging that they don't get to play them at the MCG!

And Q, Carlton, Essendon and Hawthorn (Tassie games don't count) travel as little as Collingwood.

You know what, other clubs are sick of the AFL bending over to Collingwood because they make them more money. If this was a sport like it's meant to be and not a business we would have a fair draw.

Maybe Eddie McGuire should shut his mouth about clubs getting handouts when they'd be much richer given the Collingwood schedule. I understand it's done because it generates more revenue for the AFL and the crowds are much larger, none the less it's still unfair to other clubs.

As a side note, I understand Collingwood would still be the best team in the league given a schedule similar to the Kangas.

I agree in aprt Ossie the reason why you get the games is because you are popular. But by playing those games and getting televised you get even more popular. Both feed into each other. I live in WA and we never get to see the roos play but always get collingwood that's why some of my previously non afl friends like collingwood because they see them play alot. If i was a new fan and i had the chance to go for a team that is always on television and gets all the big games or a team that gets the last game most sundays why would i pick the roos.

Even in the EPL where the teams are very uneven and the number of fans for Man U compared to bottom teams scheduling appears fair and the top teams dont appear to get any favouritism in terms of the times they play.

Collingwood, Geelong and Hawthorn are the three most powerful Vic clubs at the moment. All were on the brink of financial ruin not that long ago, before they turned themselves around. The schedule is requested by OTHER clubs, not Collingwood. And again, Carlton and Essendon especially get the same type of draws. And Friday night games are generally given to teams with success, and when the Roos are succesful again, they'll get them again.

So criticising Collingwood, while simultaneously taking the money they in part generate, seems somewhat strange. The only point the clubs have is the dreadful stadium deals, which is surely the AFL's fault, and not the Pies!

I'm sorry, but Eddie and Jeff (I hate when I say Jeff is right). It is simple economics that hand outs discourage innovation. Of course welfare SHOULD be paid, but it shouldn't be an automatic give. I.e. I'm much less likely to try and find a job if I could get $800 a week on the dole then $200 a week.... I.e. the Roos could have (even the subconscious) thought that 'why bother taking risks, where we can just take the safe way and be guaranteed an AFL pay out?"

@Holz, I have similar TV options in Canberra (worse even I'd say), but I doubt the Roos have much potential getting new supporters in states outside Vic anyway. The EPL is also advantaged by the fact that they play everyone twice (I think), and obviously that would be the fairest way in the AFL

I get where you are coming from i dont think its fair to dump on collingwood sure they get favoured but economically there are reasons for it. Actually WA does seem to have plenty of roo fans for some reason whenver i go to eagles games bsides teams likefreo and collingwood there seems to be alot more roo fans than say when they play the dogs. I think the roos have been on tv 6 times this year on free to air tv.

However ossie i dont agree that the roos will get many friday nights matchs when they are even up the top of the table, i can remeber when we finished 4 a couple of years back we didnt get many  friday matches that year or the year after.

8-6 Suited

EPL games all start at the same time on the same days in their millions of stadiums. Each club has their own. Do the AFL clubs? No. Don't compare oranges with apples Holzman please buddy.

Meh, this has been going on for years, and frankly I could careless. :P

Who expects you to care when you're on the other side of the spectrum?

Ok i have looked through the first vcouple of Monday night games in the EPl and these games are the only ones of the night and im not sure if you notice or not but these arent all the big teams playing each week it seems to be spread out evenly. Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool dont get a game in the first couple of months and Man U get 1.

Man City v Swansea
Man U v Spurs
QPR v Newcastle
Norwich v Sunderland
Stoke City v Newcatle
Spurs v Aston Villa
Stoke v Blackburn

Oh it is a very even roster. But most clubs have their TV shows to make their own money. :P

at least teams like QPR and Norwich get a chance to be in priimetime.

8-6 Suited

Exactly and that is what they need to get by. I don't like Norwich but I do like QPR. :P

While I agree with the need for the smaller, more cash strapped clubs getting a run on Friday nights... Until they perform, no one is going to watch them anyway. That is the harmful truth. The broadcasters pay for the rights to pick and choose, and unfortunately, they wont pick terrible games regardless of the need.

roo boys!

Love the article :)

This kinda stuff has been going on forever though, and really, nothing we say or do is really going to change it unless one of you builds a new AFL stadium, buys Chanel 7 and Foxtel and buys the AFL.
