Hey all, I was thinking of running some fun leagues for next year to keep it even more entertaining and just really something fun for people to do. I have a couple of ideas in mind, so please let me know what you think because unless enough people show interest, I won't bother. I know it is really early for this but I wanted to know well in advance and get an idea running before people stop showing up here after the season is over.

League 1: Golden Oldies vs Young Guns
Pretty much if the league contains 18 people, then 9 people can only select 'oldies' and 9 can only select 'young' players to fill their teams. If it contains 16 people...well, you do the maths :)

Rules:
-Oldies
-May only select players born in 1984 inclusive or later (~28 years of age or older) eg Swan
-May only select draft picks who are 20 years or older (1992) from the 2012 draft, or mature age recruits (eg mzungu) OR have not debuted yet and are born in 1988 or later.

-Pros
-Older more experienced players and probably better draft options with mature age recruits, although limited draft options

-Cons
-More expensive and injury prone

-Young Guns

-May only select players born in 1989 or earlier (~23 years of age or younger) eg rockliff
-May select any young draft pick as long as they under 20 years of age (1993) in the 2012 draft or have not debuted yet and are younger than 1989 (inlcusive). Cannot select mature age recruits who have not debuted. eg can select majority of the gold coast/GWS team list
-I realised it is impossible to select enough decent young backmen to make a team, therefore the backman age will be 1987 or younger

-Pros
-Cheaper players, can find potential superstars who are breaking out and bargains too, along with the best rookies.

-Cons
-Unable to select players with a lot of AFL experience, job security and well known superstars.

League 2: Top 8 vs Bottom 10
If the league contains 18 people, then 9 people can only select players from the top 8 sides of the 2011 season and 9 can only select players from the bottom 9 sides in the 2011 and the GWS team, to fill their teams. If it contains 16 people...well, you do the maths again :)

I won't go into so much detail, it is pretty obvious what you need to do.

-Top 8

-Pros
-You can pretty much select most of the games superstars eg Pendlebury, Swan

-Cons
-Players will be more expensive and their draft picks may not be as good

-Bottom 10
-Pros
-Get the best rookies along with superstars who are standouts for their team eg Ablett, Boyd

-Cons
-Obviously miss out on some superstar key position players eg Franklin, Goddard

Thank you for reading this!

I would really like people to PM me if they want to join a league (please say which) or both, or if you think it is a good/bad idea. I would also like you to only apply if you are ACTIVE and will check your team, and will also POST in a thread regarding your league every now and then. (Maybe once a week please?)

Also, if you have a preference to which 'side' you would like to take in either league, let me know with a PM.

Thanks again for reading through this!!!!

Done! Do you want to be in both leagues or just the one? ~5 people in each league so far! Keep it coming! :)

willing to join- young guns for me

All good man, thanks for posting!

Roughly 10 spots available for each league and I would imagine they will be snapped up early next year, so try and get in now :) I will PM all people who have asked to join and remind them about this league next year too :)

How would these leagues work with regards to trades - are there also restrictions on who you can trade in or is if just your initial team that you have to make your selection in.

For example in the top 8 league can you only trade in players from the top 8 from 2011 all season? And vice versa for the bottom 8.

Or to make it more interesting maybe you can make it that you can only trade in players from a team that is in the top 8 in that week during 2012 (and bottom 8 if you picked bottom 8 team).

So if GWS or Gold Coast win in round one or two and are in the top 8 that would probably be your only chance to get one of their players in your team. And vice versa if you are a bottom 10 team an early Geelong or Collingwood defeat might be your only chance to trade in one of their players.

You would have to list your trades somewhere and keep a record of the ladder each week so people can check that the players were traded in at the right time.

Either way I am looking to be in some more interesting and competitive leagues next season so put me down for a young guns and a bottom 10 team (they should correlate quite well) if there is space.

Good points however the bottom 8 league or 10 from the 2011 season are the only players you can trade in the whole year, not the current ladder. Same with the other league, but it goes by birthdays.

I'll put you down for both :)

Both leagues will be open for 2012!!!!

Both leagues have ~6 people 'in' them (people who said they will commit) so plenty of spots open! :)
