What do we make of Mick Malthouse last night?

Clearly there is a lot of things yet to occur in this agreement and I really doubt Mick Malthouse will be coaching anyone next year but it seems to me remarkable that it has been left so long to work it all out.

It also seems pretty likely that he will probably coach somewhere else in 12-24 months. The question I have is why did Mick Malthouse do the interview last night, he would have his reason, was it just to stir up the role negotiations?

Sly old fox, that Mick. Haven't seen the interview, but read the papers.

Mick was honest about it, and I agree, it is strange that nothing has been worked out yet. Though I guess that could be because Mick's busy working on his current job!

Love Mick to stay (would actually prefer him to remain as head coach, but can see why it is happening). Wouldn't hold it against him if he left, but Mick has spent more time at Collingwood then any other club he has been involved in, so it would be sad to see him finish at another club.

Having said that... Paul Roos as directing of coaching sounds not too bad either. Robert Walls is looking for work also I hear!

I suspect that he is considering other offers. Sam Newman obviously knew about them.. Hell Gary Lyon is probably the guy who will table Melbourne's offer to him. Looked a lot like a pre employment interview to me, Lyon was definitely sizing up MM.

If he does leave and Collingwood slide next year under Bucks, Eddie will have some questions to answer.

I still can't understand why they pushed this agenda, even two years ago when Collingwood were apparently 'struggling' MM was still one of the best and most experienced coaches in the league and Buckley was still an unproven rookie.

IMO the teams he got to the grand final in 2002/2003 just weren't talented enough to go the distance especially against the concession drunk Lions. Seems like Eddie harbours some resentment for those losses when really I don't think you can place the blame on MM.  He got the most out of that crop of players.
You won't see Man U replacing their head coach with a rookie the year after the winning the cup.

I think Eddie got greedy.
He wanted Mick to be at Collingwood & not let him leave for any other club....AND he wanted the legend of the club to join as well.

Got a bit greedy & this looked like it will blow up. Malthouse top of his game NOT coaching. If they win the premiership this year it will make things very interesting indeed.....

Maybe if Eddie didn't do it, Collingwood wouldn't have won the flag? Nathan Buckley joining the staff could have been the difference, or, alternatively, could have inspired Mick to do something different now that he had a time limit.

The flag was won. Hard to criticize decisions.

i think its very odd that he went on last night, getting to the business end of the year they wouldnt want distractions and more fuel to the media fires bcos he cant hose it down not having 100% agreed to "the role" that hasnt been determined.

i understand he wants to feel "valuable" and "interested" in his job and tbh a director of coaching doesnt sound all that interesting to me when "TDOC" isnt in the box or having a major say in what goes on with selection etc...

like MM said "passion isnt a tap, u cant just turn it off" he is clearly still passionate about the coaching game in every facet so id expect he will indeed coach elsewhere if Collingwood dont backdown from turning the reigns over to Buckley, i wouldnt expect he would say im head coach or nothing but i definitely think he isnt going to be stimulated by TDOC role and therefore turn it down forcing Collingwoods hand as to how much they would like to keep him...

i dont care to speculate on where he could end up but its apparent that all clubs that have expiring coach contracts r going to come for him which is why no coaches have been signed or offered extensions as of yet, Roos ruled himself out of any coaching position for 2012 recently which leaves no big named coaches other than MM if indeed he becomes available...

If Mick's aim was to stir the pot, which is the only reason I can think why he appeared last night, then mission accomplished.

I whole heartedly believe MM went on the Footy Show last night and said what he said to stir the pot.  It was a shot at McGuire and the Collingwood board and a signal to other clubs that he is open for offers.

agreed, but i think more to say, "let's work out what the flower you want me to do next year!" - I can't believe they haven't sorted this out - not like Collywobbles to drop the ball like this, you're not St Kilda ...   ;)

Whether he intended it as a signal to other clubs is debateable. The shot at Eddie was undeniable though.

he has been chumming the waters here and there for awhile...

off the top of my head the "other clubs should get an ANZAC day game aswell" in previous years he stated it was exclusive...

at 58/59 years old he is still young enough tackle another big project of 5-10years...

so after the Shaw story broke i wondered was Mick just trying to divert attention from the impending bombshell :-\

Windigo

......How did Shaw get caught? he just gave 10 bucks to his mate at the betting shop..... ???

The betting agencies took it further, they were wondering why anyone would bet on Nick Maxwell to kick the first goal? They went back back and saw that Shaw was there when the bet was placed.

RiOtChEsS

so Eddie says Mick told him he will be at Collingwood next year or he will retire ???

funny could have sworn Mick did not mention that the other night in the 32minute interview...
