live chat... never works for me.. doing something wrong?

i am logged into the ff main site.

type in the box provided and nothing ever shows up.

do i need to register separate for the chat?

No. Sometimes the chat moves quickly and your message may not show up.
Other than that I don't know.

Want to make sure you have written something, check the chat log for the game.

It takes a little searching if it's the first game of the round as there is no link before/during the game, only after. So just change the number at the end for the next match in line (or whichever match you are in) :).
