The politics of being banned

I agree with your contention that free speech is fundamental. My argument surrounds at what cost however - in the real world Majak Daw and Andrew Krakouer suffer racist slurs, and in the real world the perpetrators are punished.

Do you mean to say that you're free to call a black person any derogatory term, regardless of how it affects them psychologically? That disregards Mills' harm principle, another primary element of liberty, for which you hold so dear.

You question if whether people had 'stood up earlier' would we have seen a different result? That is essentially a process driven question. The process surrounding why those people submit to authority even when the outcome is morally detestable. Your arguments are full of contradictions Mr. incognito. Just as you hide behind your alias, you hide behind the ideas of others, and yet you employ them in a fashion which is inconsistent and contradictory. Shame!

This is even better than the "I'm gone" thread.

I'm just trying to work out who it is?  He has been registered for 18 months but only made 57 posts (and most of those are in this thread   :P). Rules out FLOPITOUT1

I am liberty....

Keep it going boys we are almost at 60 ;)

Look, Daw would be upset, I believe the person was removed from the ground, thats his punishment, would you suggest we put this person in jail, try your luck at the MCG, you could pull 2 or 3 thousand out of the crowd, do we send them to jail as well?

How about we create a Racism Police and they can frequent shopping malls and such, create a 1800dobaracisthotline number, how about we brainwash these evil people, give them  medication and electric shock treatment to change their views, or simply take them out the back and shoot them?

What about if we decide to apply these processes the climate change deniers, pro abortionists. where do we stop?

There are 6.5 billion people in the world, you expect them all to share a common view? No divergence in opinions? We all become clones, we are told what is right or wrong to say or not...where do you stop?

I don't agree with racism and woul;d strongly oppose it in debate, that does not mean I think a racist is the anti christ and should be separated from society. Its exists, and will always exist.

Daw must learn to tolerate it and speak out against it as I have. it exists. deal with it.

Once you make exceptions you will NEVER stop making exceptions, who decides what is good and bad, right or wrong, you? Me? The government?

We don't need a 'Racism Police' because societal norms and values dictate that it is unacceptable to make derogatory remarks about someone's race, religion, ethnicity etc.

The most exceptional thing about the Daw case is the fact it wasn't the police or government punishing the perp, it was society. The ostracism he received from the crowd, the ground officials and the media will teach a far better lesson than locking someone up ever could.

In essence, what happened with the Daw case is exactly what you (and I) are arguing for, a societal rather than governmental response. Prospector is a part of the society, just as you and I are.

Your an Idiot buddy Prospector doesn't have banning powers only m0nty has those powers. Maybe you should apologise to Prospector for starting this thread because it wasn't him.
+1

Secondly, Australia has no freedom of speech built into its constitution (unlike America)

Thirdly, you're all getting trolled so hard. Like come on, you're on an internet and you can't recognise you're being trolled to the extreme? really?!?

I just came back & would like to add 2 last things before I leave for work.

1. I don't reckon it's fair to bag someone who reads books & say they don't have their own ideas - they may just be using references from books to support their own beliefs - don't forget that by this stage in human evolution, there are probably very few to no real new ideas - esp. when it comes to philosophy, you can almost gaurantee somone else has written down - or at least had - the very same idea that someone else thinks is their original idea. So that seems a little unfair.

2. If you are certain that someone will take offence to a statement, in my humble opinion, that statement no longer falls under the guise of freedom of speech, instead it is simply a mean/nasty (take you pick) comment. That does not amount to heathly debate, but rather humiliation &/or hurt feelings. So the question must then be: why make that comment when no positivity, only hurt, will come of it?

fair point, if he wasn't trolling so hard.

Thank flowering god somebody noticed it.

I think the important thing to recognise here is that, monty banned him, not pros, and yes, monty is a bit of a dictator, and sort of fascist in his own way I guess...

that being said, your argument revolves around the freedom of speech and expression. Monty clearly believes you're a douchebag, and expresses this opinion by banning you. If you don't have facism, what do you have to compare liberty to? Are you just leaving a window open for a larger facist evil to sneak in unnoticed?

facism is part of how the world works, just as liberty and freedom are. Doesn't make it right, it's still quite abhorrent. That being said, nobody likes telstra either, but without them we wouldn't have access to our copper wire network, would have no internet and minimal phone access.

Sometimes to world needs evil.

Solid effort trolling, respect for that btw.

+ a million to that... where the hell do you even find them alll???

Bluke

Ziplock, by entering into this discussion, you have inadvertently subjected yourself to his 'trolling.'

I on the other hand willing entered into the 'debate,' for which I have no regrets and have gained much satisfaction from. Does that not make a 'troll' also? Perhaps I 'trolled' incognito? Isn't 'trolling' just a synonym for arguing, which is a synonym for debating?

By the way Ziplock, I reject completely your postulation that the world 'needs evil.' Perhaps Incognito would like to share his thoughts on the subject?

Ziplock

oh no, I'm not entering the argument, I'm just making a solitary post on my own volition. Trolling means to post with the purpose of people believing you are sincere, in order to proke a large community reaction. Clearly he's succeeded in that.

but recognising a troll is a troll, they lose a lot of their power and joy :P
