What could be an interesting statistic...

Hey everyone, Ziplock here again to fire away some questions.

Now, we have the statistic for how each team scores DT wise, which is a tasty little prospect to have... however, what I think would be extremely useful, would be a statistic for how many DT points are scored against each team on average per round... it would make captain choices, and what rookies to field etc. a lot clearer IMO, especially if the scoring averages could be broken down into DT positions of Backs, Mids, Fwds and Rucks.

Like, we all know teams will score better against Gold Coast, North Melbourne, Port Adelaide and Brisbane, and will score poorly against Sydney, Geelong and Collingwood... but, specific information and rankings, especially the positional break down, would be like DT gold.

Personally, I'm up for coagulating the information based on ff's game archives... I could theoretically do it all, but it would be pretty damned awesome if I could get a couple of people to help me with it... considering we've already had 7 round and like 80+ games, it'll take me a while to put it all together.

It'd be awesome if I could have another 6 volunteers for this, and once they're done, if they can email me their respective rounds, and I'll combine all the info into an excel spreadsheet, then see if I can upload it somewhere for people to download if they wish... I can probably keep ontop of the updating each week by myself though :)

well, we'll see how many people want to jump on board... if there's a fair few, you may only have to do 1 round :)

So, if you want to jump onto round 7 for now, that'd be awesome... I'll do rd 1 myself :)

DG

mate im happy to help out too, although slightly unclear of exactly what you want

Ziplock

ok, sorry, I'll try to explain it a bit better. Logically speaking, some AFL teams will be easier to score DT points against than others, such as gold coast, and some more difficult (conventionally sydney), by determining an accurate ranking of how OTHER teams score against each team, it can make selections for players on field/ trades a lot easier.

By breaking it down positionally into DEF MID RUC FWD, we can see how each position on an opposing team fares against each team. For example, Rucks should DT wise carve up against teams like richmond, who don't have a designated ruckman, while forwards will probably statistically do worse against collingwood, as the ball will not find its way to them.

those two are common sense of course, but by doing this we could get a few gems of information that we might not normally get.

Ziplock

only issue is I'm using the ff positions, so that may skew  the point distribution...

DG

yeah cool thats what i thought.

so 4 bits of data per game, points comparisons for def, mid, ruck, fwd.

I can get onto round 6 then over the weekend  8)

Ziplock

Excellent! I've already added up the round one points and have already positionally broken down the bull dogs + essendon game :)

Ziplock

yeah, I took an hour lunch break (I'm at work atm), just got onto my third game then. Yeah, the process of tracking down the positions is a long one.

DG

yeah i havent started anything yet!  :o

I've now done 4 games. I may knock over another 1/2 tonight, then I'll finish off the last couple tomorrow.

Have you guys had a look at the TooSerious "Ticker"? It does some analysis like this, but not quite the detail you're going into, I think.
