HTML 5 is the current version (wow - its been a while since I was doing HTML if they are up to v5).  When people refer to learning HTML they mean the current version.

Master Q

So I need to learn HTML 5? Just the Basics or all of it?

Cheers boys. I'm on W3schools at the moment.

I found this and had a go - I changed a lot of it but I'm sure it's very easy: http://www.w3schools.com/css/tryit.asp?filename=trycss_default

So I have to learn HTML. Do I learn HTML or HTML 5? What is difference or are they the same thing?

Start with HTML (will be v4.01 I think) then do XHTML (should be 1.0). HTML5 is still very new and no browser supports it fully. It is a few years off being used widely. HTML and XHTML will give you a good grounding in what you need. To give you an idea HTML 4 was brought in in 1999 and it was only around 2005-6 when browsers properly supported it.

Master Q

You both are saying different things? HTML or HTML 5? Which do I learn, and just the basics or all of it?

I would skip HTML5 for now. There is nothing in it of any great value for a beginner anyway.

Go through the entire HTML and XHTML. The entire tutorial is kinda "the basics". Take your time though, you won't fully get it in a day but you will get the general idea pretty quickly though.

+1 - what Hawk said

Its been a long time since I have coded in HTML.  I "assumed" that HTML5 was the current supported version.

Master Q

Thanks. From what I see HTML 5 is only in IE9 which is shizen houzen anyway.

Diary Entry 1#

Firstly, a huge thank you to Valk and Hawk - you guys know all of this and are making it a lot easier for me.

I've decided that I will be attempting CSS, which to learn you must know HTML and XHTML. The next few days I'll be reading over those code's tutorials a few times, once I understand both of them reasonably well I will jump into CSS.

I'm confused already hahaha :P

Good luck Q :)

Going to uni for this or just online?
Just online - If I enjoy it and understand it well maybe I'll go to Uni for it but I don't think I'll need to.

Another question:

Let's just say I learn HTML then go to CSS - when ever XHTML is needed can I just replace it with HTML?

hawk_88

XHTML is basically just good practise. I will allow for cleaner HTML script that is easier to style and more likely to display the same in most browsers.

XHTML is like an extra 10% on the HTML tutorial. They are the same language, just different standards if that makes any sense.

Master Q

Sort of get what you are saying. Taking a break from HTML as I need to go out. I've bookmarked my page so as soon as I get back I can hop straight back to where I was. It all seems pretty simple so far, although I'm not that far into it.

hawk_88

It is pretty simple, the concept anyway.

The more you do it though the more powerful you realise it is. The complexity isn't in the language (both HTML and CSS), but how you choose use it. That being said you don't have to something complex for it to be any good. In fact generally the simpler the method for achieving something the better.

It will all come with practice though.

CFML aim high. aka Cold Fusion Markup Language, runs in conjunction with java or even as stand alone .NET server. Back in the day CF was the bomb especially in handling database and manipulation of vector graphics. Adobe claimed CF a few years back and it is more tangible now than ever. Based on c/c++ I have used it since 1997. I could go on and on about CFML, easier to Google it.

PS. This little sucker would be on my DT if I could. He plays any KPP with such efficiency and class.
