Without knowing if in the future we will be calling say Josh Caddy the camparision of say Judd or Swallow the comparision of Bartel lets take a look into their first draft and the 2001 draft which was famous for superstars of the past few years

2004(what could have been the picks that GC had, if the recruiters knew their real potential)
1. Chris Judd(Real pick priority 3)----- David Swallow
2. Luke Hodge (priority 1)------------- Harley Bennell
3. Jimmy Bartel (8 )----------------------- Sam Day
7. Nick Dal Santo (13)------------------- Josh Caddy
9. Sam Mitchell (36)---------------------- Dion Prestia
10. Steve Johnson (24)----------------- Daniel Gorringe
11. Leigh Montagna (37)---------------- Tom Lynch
13. David Rodan (33)--------------------- Seb Tape
39. Dane Swan (58)----------------------- Jeremy Taylor
49. Brian Lake (71)------------------------- Jacob Gilbee

2001 was obviously a freak draft - the chances of GC keeping ALL of these players for more than a couple of years is zero, let alone keeping them all for 10! Salary cap will screw them over, most will head to other teams after their contracts are up.

Oh yeah definitely, and even more so, once they prove themselves to be half decent then they would expect a pay-rise (and rightfully so!) giving the GCS a massive headache salary-cap wise in a couple of years time when contracts expire. Would NOT want to be in their position, imagine the list management that would need to be done!  :o

Yeh, This makes me happy actually as it wouldnt be fair if they were a premiership team in 5 years.
but imagine how much interest players like Zac Smith will command!
A team like Richmond would kill for a young potential gun ruckman.

Potential? By the looks of him, he's ready made for the AFL right now! Will only get better 8).

Smith is the next Cox/Sandi no doubt. A gift to all us SCers, as an extra midfielder. Gotta love the stuff.

Looks to be one of the greats, and for all we know he could re-re-re-invent rucks from the last couple of decades.

Pfft. Agree that Swallow, Smith and a couple others will be good but making comparisons to Bartel, Dal Santo, Hodge is way too early. There are ALWAYS player with high expectations who turn out to be duds or cannot fufill their potential due to injury. Thats the way of the world.

Such as Gumby :\ Could have been as good as Cloke or even Roo if he never got injured. He is spudly now.

Or JOK, what a fail :P
There is no way, this was a relatively strong draft at the top but '01 was just scary good. You can't go there, no way all these players will be as good as the ones you compared them to. But they will be good no doubt :)
