I purchase Macs in hope SJ will send me a turtleneck :P

Some of you don't realise Mac force you to use their products, unlike Windows were there are so many choices and thousands of 3rd Party Software.

lol @ anyone supporting macs. Smartasses Cost less then $2 to make an iPhone.

Also, how much did you pay for the i5. Pretty much already outdated.

Finally, I have found someone to nerd it up with. :D

Outdated is very much the wrong term.

Unless he got the new quad from sandy, yes it is outdated. Even then, its almost 5 months old. New line will be out soon.

I assume you are asking me this question :)  I am not saying how much I paid for it because I got it at cost price.

Andrew3737

Pretty much everyone who builds there own pcs get it @ cost price because they know people in that industry. It's not really a big deal.

valkorum

Still I wont tell :P

Although cos my missus loves Macs (dont get me started) I had to pay full retail for the 13" macbook pro of $1399

Andrew3737

Hopefully you didn't pay 1399 for the desktop either   :-X

But yes 1399 for that hunk of shower called a mac is really bad.

The missus is happy - thats all that matters.

Outdated doesn't mean "not the newest".

The i5 is a very modern chip architecture and is more than enough for any application that 99% of people would ever need to run. When you look at price vs performance you would be silly to buy any of the Sandy Bridge range unless you explicitly need that level of performance. Plus, given the recall and various issues they have had with architecture ironically when compiling on it for high performance applications, I would avoid it for a little while anyway.

New doesn't necessarily mean better. Early adopters almost always learn this lesson.

Andrew3737

I wouldn't touch a i5 over a i7. If you look @ the prices between a few machines, there is almost little difference, but benchmarks between the 2 are just lol.

obvious best choice is to just build your own with i7, but if you go harvey or wherever you want, the prices between i5 machines and i7machines are very very little, esp in lappys.

Also, with this architecture, there hasn't been a single application, or reason to ever upgrade from the Q6600 or even back to the E8400. But it does happen. Plus, that chip can OC to the max.

It can be overclocked very well, but you never really need to for any general computing. Generally people overclock simply to say they have.

As for the difference in price. Generally the i7s that are close to the i5s in price use the Westmere's which are only dual core and have a very minimal performance increase and for some applications they have less.

I would avoid benchmarking as a sole factor in deciding the quality of a piece of hardware. It can be indicative, but very inaccurate or misleading as well. We don't really have a better way of measuring it (MS has attempted a more user friendly measure with the Windows Experience Index) which means people put a lot of stock into it and because of this both CPU and GPU producers especially tailor their hardware to do very well in the more common "standard" tests.
