Phew! - Just got a call from Mum and she said she'd spoken to the father of an old high school mate (who is also a Japanese teacher) and can confirm that my pseudo sister Sachiyo and her family is fine and safe in Kamisu prefecture.

nuclear reactor blast.

okay I'll say this once.

Japan... most technologically advanced country in the world.
Plant would have been designed to withstand earthquakes.

It didn't.
They have had no control over 5 reactors at 2 plants.
NO CONTROL over a nuclear reactor in the most technologically advanced country in the world.

Not only can we not dispose of the stuff, but this should put to bed any argument for nuclear power.

It is not clean. It is not reliable. It is not responsible. It should stay in the ground.
I disagree.
Nuclear reactors, if built correctly are much safer and cleaner than coal.
There has never been a death in the US caused by a nuclear reactor and in France, most of their power comes from it.
The only problem is when this stuff happens, if they are sabotaged by terrorists or not built to withstand what they need to, disaster. Huge.

Thing is this is a very old nuclear reactor so it is not as high-tech as it should or could be, and they aren't going to build it again because it is VERY expensive at first (although, inthe long run cheaper.)

So, while I personally am FOR nuclear power, I can see the argument against it :P

old shomould alex, so every nuclear reactor built that's old is allowed to have issues because it's old? the fact is, nuclear reactors carry a great risk - just because it hasn't happened often before, doesn't mean it can't. and you have to ask yourself is the risk worth it?

tell me, what would you like to do with the waste that lasts and remains toxic for 250,000 years?

here's an idea - in australia our government pumps millions into the coal and uranium industry every year to HELP them out. yes, help them out. they do not need help. in australia we can use renewable technology to power australia. we have the math, clean, NO RISK, NO WASTE, renewable energy. yet, how much money gets given to the renewables industry?

i dare you to check it out for yourself. its disgusting.

the only reason nuclear is around is because its cheap to dig out of the ground and sell.

Renewable energy is the way to go long term but we seriously need to research more into it. Right now it costs too much to an average family when compared to that of the electricity from Coal. If we invest more and find more efficent ways, it is much better for us and the environment. The good side to nuclear power is that it is cheap. France use Nuclear power and have the cheapest electricity in the world last few years. But we make so much money from selling our Uranium and other resources which generate billions of dollars for the economy. It also takes quite some time to build a chain of nuclear plants to suit our needs which could take 7+ years depending on unforeseen complications. I have a bunch of information in power point form which I've done for School Orals past 2 years if anybody is interested.

I loved my Science/Physics teacher from past years as he loved talking about the stuff about energy and eletricity and all these scientists. It was very funny and quite interesting.

my biggest beef is the average family are happy to pay for things they want but get up in arms when it comes to paying the real cost of things they need. fundamental flaw with today's society.

Alex7089

We also need to consider if we went to nuclear power prices would go up before they went down, very expensive to actually build the plants.

Justin Bieber

Long term though they would be cheaper (decades) but short term it'll hurt big time financially.

That's why many countries built it quite a while ago so they are now benefitting from it.
