Are people getting too carried away with mid-range bargains?

I think I've got through about 20 revisions of my team.  I think I got far too carried away with these mid-range type of guys.  I have been noticing similar things with my colleagues at work.

These are  just a small number of examples:

Dangerfield - 340 k
Bernie Vince - 350 k
Liam Anthony - 350 k
Leroy Jetta - 380 k
Mitch Morton - 370 k

They all seem like bargains on paper, but the reality is only a small number of them will probably go on.  I guess its about finding the right balance.

I dunno maybe this year the mid range strategy might work better because of all the byes?  Personally I've gone for more rookies in the 100-200k range because I think the quality has gone up considerably.

i agree that people shouldnt be jumping on jetta and morton.. however i think that anthony and vince have both proved they can make the leap to premo.. as for dangerfield its anyone guess when he will breakout...

Higgins, Jurrah and Zaharakis also are bandied about.

They are risks, but I haven't been able to make a team without at least a couple of mid-pricers

think it because everybody is scared of the bye this season, tryin to find good bench cover by using more mid price bargains. Think the overall winner this season will need a hell of a lot of luck and better fully explain how he/she pulled it off come seasons end

It all comes down to risks, whether you take on rookies, or you take on mid-pricers.

The rookies don't have to score as high in order to rise in price, so IMO that means less risk, where as the mid pricers have to score higher in order to break even and rise in value, so that is greater risk.

So, it's up to you whether you want to be conservative, or take a risk, but you have to take risks at some point or another to win this thing, especially in a year with byes.

Remember this year we have the safety of having 4 more trades as well, it doesn't hurt to take risks.

but if you over do the mid rangers, wouldn't this mean you would get less guys in the elite.

like u owuld probably have to settle for the guys around 95-100 range instead of the 110 averages

Fletch74

Of course if you overdo the mid-pricers it will have an effect, but nothing wrong with having 2-3 though.

I'll only have one at each line. There are soooooo many rookies to cash up on. With the cash in the bank I'll grab Blue chippers from rounds 5-9. With the team settled by 13 and heading for a league win. ;D

im afraid supercoach never works out how you plan it ;)
I think the mid price strategy is risky, but could reap you the rewards.
Ill be having a couple of punts but i wont be overdoing it.
Certainly the extra trades is enough cover incase you pick the wrong guys.

i've been monitoring Zah a little bit after Dr Dream Team (yeah, taking his stuff with a ton of salt ...) quoted Hirdy as saying that he'd trained all pre-season for a move into the mids - this hasn't played out and he hasn't made me think this is a break-out year for him - Hurley has actually impressed me more, though i can't really fit him in.

Higgins - I'm looking at him for a very short-window 'cash-cow' scenario - wanting him to make me $80-$120k and then dump him quick before he probably gets injured ...

nope, ton of salt as in be ultra-weary of what he says rather than just a small 'pinch' ...  ;)

Been burned too many times by the mid price curse, just thinking of the 'great pickups' of last year, Grey, Tippet, Higgins.... Premiums and Rookies all the way, with a few lower mid pricers in Petrie, Knights, Krak, Otten, most of the value in mid pricers seems to be in the forward line to me, with so many guns, and great rookies under 200k in the mids just cant select any there!
